Department Overview
The Product team at Maximus Canada delivers eHealth software, services and support to Canadian jurisdictions and international clients. The portfolio includes both legacy solutions and modern SaaS offerings of our flagship product, Medigent, that support claims adjudication, beneficiary and provider management, drug information system, health program administration, integrations, data exchange, reporting, and digital health experiences.
The Product organization is responsible for the design, development, enhancement, implementation, support, maintenance, and modernization of solutions that enable the delivery of critical healthcare services while maintaining operational reliability, security, compliance, and client satisfaction.
About The Role
The Director, Product Engineering provides strategic and operational leadership for engineering delivery, technology execution, platform sustainability, and engineering governance across the Maximus Product portfolio. Working within a matrix team structure, the Director, Product Engineering collaborates closely with Product Management, Product Operations, Architecture, Quality Assurance, DevOps, Product Support, Professional Services, Security, Privacy, client stakeholders, and executive leadership to ensure Product strategy is translated into scalable, secure, maintainable, and high-quality technology solutions. The role is responsible for establishing engineering direction, delivery frameworks, governance practices, organizational capability, and technology priorities that support business objectives, client commitments, operational excellence, modernization initiatives, and long-term Product growth. The Director, Product Engineering balances engineering execution, operational reliability, product innovation, modernization investments, technology risk management, and organizational development to help ensure the continued success, competitiveness, and sustainability of the Product portfolio.
What a Typical Week Looks Like
- Provide leadership and strategic direction for engineering teams responsible for development, maintenance, modernization, integration, release management, operational support, and technology enablement across the Product portfolio.
- Establish and execute engineering strategies, delivery models, governance frameworks, and operational practices that support Product roadmaps, client commitments, organizational priorities, and business objectives.
- Ensure engineering investments, priorities, and resources are aligned with Product strategy, architectural direction, operational requirements, security obligations, and client outcomes.
- Partner with Product leadership to support roadmap planning, release oversight, prioritization decisions, modernization initiatives, technical debt management, platform sustainability, and innovation opportunities.
- Provide executive oversight of engineering delivery performance, capacity planning, workforce planning, risk management, quality outcomes, operational readiness, and technology health indicators.
- Establish engineering governance practices that support predictable delivery, effective decision-making, transparency, accountability, continuous improvement, and organizational alignment.
- Lead resolution of complex technology, delivery, operational, resourcing, and stakeholder challenges affecting Product outcomes and organizational priorities.
- Promote engineering excellence through adoption of modern software development practices, automation, AI-assisted development approaches, DevOps capabilities, quality disciplines, and engineering standards.
- Build and maintain high-performing engineering organizations through talent acquisition, workforce planning, leadership development, succession planning, performance management, coaching, and employee engagement.
- Foster collaboration across the Product team and business stakeholders to improve delivery effectiveness, operational readiness, solution quality, and client satisfaction.
- Establish, monitor and manage engineering metrics, delivery indicators, operational performance measures, and governance reporting that support informed decision-making and organizational visibility.
- Ensure engineering teams appropriately balance innovation, maintainability, scalability, reliability, security, privacy, resiliency, operational supportability, and long-term product sustainability.
- Support organizational planning, budgeting, technology investment decisions, modernization strategies, cloud transformation initiatives, SaaS evolution, and operational improvement efforts.
- Provide leadership during major incidents, escalations, business continuity events, operational disruptions, and client-impacting situations requiring executive oversight.
- Follow corporate standards, policies, and procedures related to software delivery, privacy, security, governance, documentation, information management, compliance, and operational controls.
What You Bring
- University degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
- Minimum ten (10) years of progressive experience delivering enterprise software solutions, including experience leading engineering organizations, technology teams, or software delivery functions.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience leading managers, engineering leaders, architects, or multi-disciplinary technical teams.
- Demonstrated experience managing engineering strategy, delivery execution, resource planning, technology governance, and operational accountability within complex software development environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with technical, operational, business, client, and executive audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to lead organizational change, influence strategic decisions, manage competing priorities, and build alignment across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Experience working within Agile, DevOps, iterative, SaaS, cloud-enabled, or hybrid delivery environments.
- Experience supporting healthcare, eHealth, claims adjudication, benefits administration, provider management, beneficiary management, or modern technology environments utilizing FHIR.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Strong understanding of enterprise software architecture, engineering leadership, software delivery lifecycle practices, cloud-hosted environments, operational support models, and technology governance.
- Lead engineering organizations responsible for developing, modernizing, maintaining, enhancing, securing, and supporting business-critical software solutions.
- Guide engineering activities across application services, APIs, integrations, databases, cloud platforms, shared product capabilities, data exchange services, and enterprise technology ecosystems.
- Apply engineering and organizational leadership expertise to support strategic planning, prioritization, investment decisions, modernization initiatives, technology roadmaps, and delivery governance.
- Establish engineering operating models, capacity planning approaches, delivery standards, quality controls, metrics frameworks, and resource management practices that support predictable outcomes.
- Promote adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices, automation capabilities, modern delivery approaches, and emerging software development technologies.
- Balance delivery commitments, modernization priorities, operational requirements, security obligations, quality expectations, technical sustainability, and client outcomes.
- Navigate complex technical, operational, business, and organizational challenges while supporting cross-functional Product priorities and strategic objectives.
- Provide strategic leadership for engineering modernization, cloud adoption, platform transformation, SaaS enablement, scalability improvements, and technology evolution initiatives.
Preferred Skills
- Experience leading large-scale modernization initiatives, cloud transformation programs, SaaS evolution efforts, platform renewal initiatives, or enterprise technology transformation activities.
- Familiarity with multi-tenant product architectures, configurable platforms, shared services, cloud-native engineering practices, and scalable SaaS operating models.
- Experience establishing engineering governance frameworks, operating models, organizational standards, delivery methodologies, or technology centres of excellence.
- Exposure to digital health interoperability standards, healthcare integration ecosystems, APIs, enterprise data exchange concepts, and regulated technology environments.
- Experience supporting highly configurable, multi-client, multi-jurisdiction software platforms.
- Understanding of operational resilience, observability, cybersecurity, privacy, regulatory compliance, disaster recovery, and business continuity practices.
