Original job description

Role Summary

As a Cloud Software Engineer, you will contribute to the full stack solutions for several consumer products using diverse technologies and best software development practices. You will work where innovation and experimentation are a given. You will demonstrate mastery in technical leadership and security-first mindset.
We embrace an AI-First development philosophy. We expect you to aggressively leverage advanced AI tools (with a strong preference for Claude Code) and "vibe coding" workflows to supercharge your development velocity.
You will design robust microservices and APIs that enable seamless frontend integration. While our core environment is built on AWS and Golang, a valuable part of this role will include occasionally assisting with the modernization and eventual migration of a legacy .NET system into our primary stack.
This is a Hybrid position in Canada. Candidates who live within commutable distance of Waterloo or Toronto are preferred. You will be required to be onsite from time to time as determined by the needs of the business. We are only considering candidates located in Canada and are not providing relocation at this time.

About the Role

  • AI-Accelerated Development: Utilize Claude Code and other AI development agents to write, debug, and iterate on backend systems at an accelerated pace.
  • Scalable Architecture: Design, build, and maintain high-performance microservices and robust APIs to support diverse frontend client applications (Desktop & Mobile).
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Develop and optimize cost-efficient, secure, and resilient infrastructure predominantly on the AWS cloud platform.
  • Database Management: Manage, query, and optimize PostgreSQL databases for high availability and performance.
  • Automation & Scripting: Write clean, maintainable automation scripts using Python and Bash to streamline deployment and troubleshooting.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Product Managers to align requirements, Test Engineers (QA) to ensure robust quality gates, and Solution Architects to design highly scalable, resilient cloud architectures.
  • Proactive System Observability: Utilize big data analytics platforms like Databricks to monitor and analyze consumer data patterns, proactively catching anomalies and systemic bugs before they turn into critical production incidents.
  • Legacy Modernization (Secondary): Contribute to the architectural planning and migration of legacy backend components into AWS, Golang, and PostgreSQL.
  •

About You

  • Collaboration & Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with a proven track record of working closely with Architects to design complex systems and collaborating across Product and QA teams.
  • Data-Driven Observability: Experience leveraging data platforms like Databricks (or equivalent big data/analytics tools) to evaluate user traffic, data patterns, and platform health.
  • AI-First Mindset: Demonstrated experience leveraging AI coding toolchains (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) to significantly increase development velocity.
  • Backend Expertise: Strong professional experience as a Backend or Cloud Engineer, with deep expertise in Golang and its toolchain.
  • Front End Expertise: Experience in Dart and Flutter is preferred
  • Database Proficiency: Hands-on experience working with PostgreSQL relational databases.
  • Cloud Platforms: Advanced production experience with the AWS ecosystem and cloud design principles.
  • API & Microservices: Proven track record of designing scalable microservices architectures and building clean RESTful or gRPC APIs.
  • Scripting: Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting for tooling, debugging, and automation.
  • Environment: Comfortable working in Linux-based development environments with an understanding of CI/CD practices and Test-Driven Development (TDD).
  • Experience with GCP (Google Cloud Platform) and Couchbase Capella is a plus.
  • Familiarity with .NET and C# (highly valued for understanding legacy code logic during migration) is a plus.
  • Background or interest in cybersecurity and antivirus software data pipelines is a plus.
