Original job description

Role Summary

McAfee VPN is seeking a Full-Stack Developer to build and maintain the services and experiences that support our VPN products. You’ll work across the stack, with deep ownership of the Scala and JVM services and APIs behind our customer experiences, and you’ll help operate applications deployed to AWS. You’ll also help shape how we build and ship software securely. The role combines API development, production troubleshooting, security-minded engineering, and improvements to reliability and maintainability.
This is a Hybrid position located in either Waterloo or Toronto, Canada. You may be required to be onsite on an as-needed basis. We are only considering candidates within a commutable distance to one of the two locations and are not offering relocation assistance at this time.

Our approach to hybrid work is built on flexibility, trust, and purpose. We don’t measure presence; we measure impact. When we come together, it’s intentional and energizing. This gives our people the best of both worlds: autonomy to focus deeply and connection to collaborate meaningfully.
Position Details

About the Role:

As a Full-Stack Developer on McAfee VPN, you’ll develop and support the services that power VPN management, product APIs, and customer-facing experiences, and you’ll see your work through from service to the surfaces customers use. You’ll work across modern services and established systems, delivering new capabilities while keeping production applications dependable, and you’ll help the team build security into how we design, develop, and release software.

Our code is primarily Scala, with Java and JavaScript also in use. Our applications run on AWS, with infrastructure configuration maintained alongside application code.

What you’ll do

  • Design, build, test, and maintain services and APIs across the stack.
  • Develop in Scala and contribute to Java and JavaScript code bases as needed.
  • Work with client and frontend teammates to deliver features end to end.
  • Diagnose production issues and improve reliability, performance, and maintainability.
  • Identify, triage, and remediate security vulnerabilities in code, dependencies, and infrastructure.
  • Help define and evolve our secure software development lifecycle (SDLC), including threat modeling, secure code review, dependency and vulnerability scanning, and security testing in CI/CD.
  • Collaborate on AWS deployments and infrastructure changes.
  • Review code, strengthen tests and documentation, and work with teammates to deliver changes safely.
  • Improve established systems while preserving the behavior customers depend on.

What you’ll bring

  • Experience developing production services in Scala, Java, or another JVM language.
  • Experience designing and maintaining APIs.
  • A security background, with experience writing secure code and comfort addressing security issues, from vulnerability reports to remediation.
  • Experience developing, improving, or contributing to an SDLC that incorporates security practices.
  • Familiarity with AWS-hosted applications and the practices needed to deploy and support them.
  • Strong debugging, testing, and code-review skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple languages and both newer and established codebases.

Nice to have

  • Experience with client or frontend development (for example JavaScript or TypeScript, web or mobile clients).
  • Experience developing VPN-specific software, such as VPN clients, protocols, or tunneling.
  • Experience with Scala, Java, and JavaScript in the same product environment.
  • Experience with Go.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code or HCL-based configuration.
  • Experience building network-related services or improving the reliability of production systems.
