Original job description

About McElhanney

Based in Western Canada for over 110 years, McElhanney offers innovative and practical engineering, surveying, mapping, planning, landscape architecture, and environmental services. As a 100% employee-owned and operated firm, with over 1,500 staff members in 31 locations, we are proud to offer qualified staff with shareholding options in our company. At McElhanney, we work in teams to build strong connections with our staff, clients, and local communities. Our employees enjoy working here because of our varied projects, high levels of autonomy, opportunities for career development, excellent total compensation and benefits package, and collaborating with a team of great professionals.

The Opportunity

Join McElhanney’s internship program starting in May 2027, where you'll discover the direction you want to take your career by gaining hands-on experience in both field and office settings. We connect you with industry-leading mentors and a cohort of top-tier students across Canada. We are hiring for our Cranbrook branch, where you’ll support field and office work across surveying projects. Our interns work with multidisciplinary teams to apply what they’ve learned in school and assist with project delivery in Surveying and Geomatics. From field operations to office-based data processing, you’ll develop the skills and training necessary to solve real-world problems.

Our team fosters a welcoming environment that encourages learning, growth, and building meaningful relationships. More importantly, we’ve cultivated a fun and inclusive culture, making McElhanney a workplace where our interns often choose to build long-term careers after graduation. Additionally, we’ve created programs to nurture the growth of future leaders. We’re proud of our reputation for developing talent and maintaining a positive, friendly, and rewarding work environment.

Join McElhanney, a firm with big company opportunities and a small company feel!

What You’ll Do

Assist in the use of GNSS receivers for RTK, RTN, static measurements, and total stations.
Collaborate with Project Managers to prepare files, maps, and survey data for project delivery.
Research plans, titles, documents, and related geospatial information.
Maintain, clean, monitor, and report the condition of equipment and vehicles.
Work in both office and field environments across the East Kootenay region and surrounding project sites, gaining exposure to a variety of surveying and geomatics projects.
Learn about and operate emerging technologies, including drones, 3D laser scanning, reality capture tools, and other advanced geomatics equipment.
Participate in McElhanney’s industry-leading safety practices to meet and exceed client needs, ensuring that our teams "Think Safe, Work Safe, and Get Home Safe”.

Practice Areas You’ll Focus On

As part of your experience, you’ll gain exposure to surveying, geomatics technology, and potentially ground disturbance-related work, depending on project needs. You’ll build practical knowledge and technical skills while working on real-world projects with support from experienced team members.

Surveying: Gain exposure to field and office surveying work, supporting project teams with data collection, calculations, plans, and related project deliverables.
Geomatics Technology: Gain exposure to modern survey and geomatics tools, including GNSS, total stations, drones, 3D laser scanning, reality capture tools, and related data processing.

What You’ll Bring

Enrolled in a Diploma or Degree program in Geomatics.
Ability to work in a variety of outdoor settings including wilderness/backcountry environments for extended periods with varied hours.
A willingness and ability to travel and work out of town.
Able to work in on busy sites with varied terrain and ability to lift heavy equipment.
Previous work experience working in outdoors environments is an asset.
Excellent attention to detail, good judgement and clear communication skills.
Modern technical aptitude and an interest in advanced reality capture, GIS, geospatial, or survey technologies is an asset.
Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
