Original job description

About McElhanney

Based in Western Canada for over 110 years, McElhanney offers innovative and practical engineering, surveying, mapping, planning, landscape architecture, and environmental services. As a 100% employee-owned and operated firm, with over 1,500 staff members in 31 locations, we are proud to offer qualified staff with shareholding options in our company. At McElhanney, we work in teams to build strong connections with our staff, clients, and local communities. Our employees enjoy working here because of our varied projects, high levels of autonomy, opportunities for career development, excellent total compensation and benefits package, and collaborating with a team of great professionals.

The Opportunity

McElhanney is currently seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our team as a Survey/Geomatics Technician in Courtenay. This is a great opportunity for a dedicated individual who is looking to gain hands on surveying experience with a multidisciplinary team.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work alongside a team of Land Surveyors and Survey Technologists as well as Civil, Geotechnical and Structural Engineers and technologists on a variety of legal, topographic, engineering and construction projects. Within this role, you will primarily provide field survey services using conventional survey methods but will also have the opportunity to work with Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS, a.k.a. drones), LiDAR (statics and mobile, terrestrial and aerial), bathymetric systems, and more, as well as complete office processing and deliverable production.

The successful candidate will primarily support projects in the North Island, with a willingness to travel out of town for work as required. During periods of lower local workload, there may also be opportunities to support major projects in other locations, providing additional project exposure and variety.

This role is designated as a safety-sensitive position and completion of a pre-employment drug & alcohol and fitness for work testing is required.

Live, Work and Play in Courtenay!

Nestled in the heart of Vancouver Island’s Comox Valley, Courtenay offers the perfect balance of small-town charm and big-city amenities. With world-class skiing at Mount Washington, sandy beaches just minutes away, and endless hiking and biking trails, it’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts year-round. The community is known for its welcoming atmosphere, growing cultural scene, and affordable lifestyle compared to larger city centres, making it an ideal place to build both a career and a life.

What You’ll Do

Conduct conventional and GPS field surveys.
Interpret field data to create accurate survey drawings and legal plans. This will include downloading and editing field data, interpreting field notes and sketches, and processing conventional and GNSS data.

Liaising with Project Managers and clients regarding project scope and enquiries.
Implementing quality assurance on all field returns and office deliverables.

What You’ll Bring

Two-year technical diploma or degree in geomatics with up to 3 years of previous experience in a similar role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience with Microsurvey, AutoCAD Civil3D, Trimble Access, Leica Infinity and Starnet would be a strong asset. Experience with RPAS systems including basic and advanced pilot license is a strong asset.
Experience with 3D scanning equipment and software is an asset.
Physically fit, able to lift heavy equipment, willing to work in various environmental conditions with varied terrain, able to work in wildlife populated areas, and willing to work in remote areas for extended periods and varied hours.
Knowledge of survey and boundary calculation, geodetic coordinate systems and map projections.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing priorities effectively.
Basic understanding of the BC Land Titles system.
Strong communication skills.
Adherence to corporate safety policies and reporting.
Valid and unrestricted Class 5 driver’s license required.
Ability to work independently to complete tasks and meet deadlines in a timely manner.
