FACULTY POSITION IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Position Description:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at McGill University invites applications for one tenure-track position in Mechanical Engineering, preferably at the Assistant Professor level.

The Department seeks candidates whose research advances the dynamics, control, and autonomy of aerospace systems, with particular interest in unmanned/autonomous aerial vehicles or space systems engineering.

We are particularly interested in candidates working in areas including, but are not limited to, guidance, navigation, and control (GNC), autonomous systems, flight dynamics, and spacecraft dynamics. Examples may include autonomous navigation, multi-agent or cooperative systems, intelligent and resilient autonomy, launch vehicle dynamics and control, proximity operations and on-orbit servicing, and experimental or hardware-in-the-loop validation.

Candidates whose work bridges these areas or integrates emerging approaches such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, perception, or data-driven methods within aerospace systems are also encouraged to apply.

The Department is committed to excellence in teaching in its undergraduate and graduate programs in Mechanical Engineering and values service contributions of its faculty members to the University, the profession and society at-large.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Candidates must have a Ph.D., preferably with a first degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, and a strong commitment to excellence in research and teaching. Evidence of outstanding research achievements, or research potential, is essential.

Preferred qualifications include dedication to an environment that supports diversity of population and perspectives; as our students come from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and backgrounds, we invite candidates to address in their application their ability to teach, supervise, and mentor in this context. Membership or eligibility for membership in a Canadian professional engineering association is required. Proficiency in both English and French, or a demonstrated willingness and ability to acquire French proficiency, is considered an asset.

Job Duties:

Successful candidates will have a strong commitment to the mission of the University, through outstanding activities in the areas of research, teaching and service.

We welcome and encourage applications from racialized persons/visible minorities, women, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, and persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, as well as from all qualified candidates with the skills and knowledge to engage productively with diverse communities.

At McGill, research that reflects diverse intellectual traditions, methodologies, and modes of dissemination and translation is valued and encouraged. Candidates are invited to demonstrate their research impact both within and across academic disciplines and in other sectors, such as government, communities, or industry.

McGill further recognizes and fairly considers the impact of leaves (e.g., family care or health-related) that may contribute to career interruptions or slowdowns. Candidates are encouraged to signal any leave that affected productivity, or that may have had an effect on their career path. This information will be considered to ensure the equitable assessment of the candidate’s record.
