Position Summary:
Reporting directly to the Associate Director, Suicide Prevention and Crisis Management, the Case Manager in the Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS), Crisis Response (CMCR) plays a key role in advancing and implementing McGill’s Student Suicide Prevention Framework. Working closely with the Associate Director, the Crisis Response Team, and campus and community partners, the CMCR supports institutional efforts that strengthen suicide prevention, early identification, coordinated care, crisis intervention, and postvention across the University.

The CMCR position is recognized by the University as a first point of contact for students experiencing academic or non-academic difficulties, crisis situations, and other complex concerns. The incumbent assesses and intervenes in crisis situations to ensure student safety and provides confidential, non-judgmental, short-term support to students throughout their academic journey. The role supports students in navigating available resources, facilitates referrals to appropriate campus and community services, and regularly consults with the Associate Director and the Crisis Response Team to ensure coordinated and effective case management. The incumbent collaborates with stakeholders across and beyond the University to promote student well-being, academic success, and access to support.

In support of the Student Suicide Prevention Framework, the CMCR develops and delivers training for students, faculty, staff, and key stakeholders on suicide prevention, recognizing and responding to student distress, crisis intervention, and referral pathways. The incumbent also provides consultation and support to faculties in the development and implementation of postvention protocols following student deaths or other critical incidents. In collaboration with the Associate Director and the Crisis Response Team, the CMCR contributes to the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of procedures, protocols, and best practices related to suicide prevention, and crisis management, helping to foster a coordinated, proactive, and evidence-informed culture of care across the University.

Primary Responsibilities:

Collaborates with the Associate Director in the implementation and ongoing evaluation of McGill's Student Suicide Prevention Framework.
Develops and delivers training for faculty, staff, and key stakeholders on suicide prevention, student distress recognition, crisis response, and referral pathways.

Provides consultation and support to faculties in the development and implementation of postvention protocols following student deaths or critical incidents.

Supports institutional initiatives aimed at strengthening suicide prevention, early intervention, and coordinated care across the university.

Contributes to the development of protocols, procedures, and best practices related to crisis response, and suicide prevention.

Assess the situation of a student and can determine if there are any safety risks to self or others.

Manages student cases, which can range from complex issues surrounding academics, disruptive behaviors, or crisis, to very high-risk crisis situations.

Collaborates with the Case Manager Crisis Response Team regularly regarding students of concern or in need of academic guidance.

Ensures regular follow-up with students in need while respecting the limitations of the Case Manager Crisis Response role.

Ensures that student files are properly documented and that notes are always up to date.

Maintains confidentiality of student files and all information gathered.

Collaborate with University stakeholders to facilitate referrals to appropriate internal support services and takes initiative by collaborating and mobilizing these services to help students in the best way possible, while considering the limitations and realities of the resources available.

Consults regularly with the Associate Director.

Participates in ODoS weekly team meetings.

Actively participates in the weekly Crisis Response Team meetings led by the Associate Director.

Shows leadership and confidence when organizing and leading meetings with faculty members regarding students of concern.

Takes initiative in working directly with hospitals or other external support resources for students at a high risk for suicide when required.

Builds and maintains positive collaborative relationships with various internal stakeholders who are closely connected to Student Life and Learning.

As required, participates in the development of inclusive policies, protocols, procedures, workshops or trainings.

As required, deliver workshops to faculty and staff members regarding how to detect students of concern, in crisis or suicide danger, and referral pathways.

Engages in professional development activities when required.

Remain current on best practices related to case management, threat assessment, and crisis intervention and emerging research.

Actively participates in Performance Dialogues 2-3 times a year lead by the Associate Director.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate competence in crisis intervention, suicide crisis intervention prevention and postvention, as well as a knowledge of mental health crisis interventions and case management in a university context.
