Original job description

Building the space between proven and possible, MDA Space (TSX:MDA) is a trusted mission partner to the global space industry. A robotics, satellite systems and geointelligence pioneer with a 55-year+ story of world firsts and more than 450 missions, MDA Space is a global leader in communications satellites, Earth and space observation, and space exploration and infrastructure. The MDA Space team of more than 4,000 space experts in Canada, the US and the UK has the knowledge and know-how to turn an audacious customer vision into an achievable mission – bringing to bear a one-of-a-kind mix of experience, engineering excellence and wide-eyed wonder that’s been in our DNA since day one. For those who dream big and push boundaries on the ground and in the stars to change the world for the better, we’ll take you there.

The Role:

As a Power Electronics PCB Designer, you’ll be at the forefront of space innovation, developing power electronics for satellites and other space-based systems. Your work will include designing motor drive units, DC power systems, telemetry, and control circuits on printed circuit boards (PCBs).

At MDA Space, you'll engage in diverse technical experiences while collaborating with world-leading experts in satellite technology. Picture yourself contributing to projects like the Aurora Program, a cutting-edge satellite product line featuring digital payload technologies, or helping build Telesat Lightspeed’s fleet of 198 advanced Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites just to name a few.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and implement power electronics solutions on PCBs for space applications.
Translate technical requirements into innovative board designs.
Lead schematic capture, layout constraints, and design simulations (e.g., LTSpice, BoardSim).
Perform design analyses such as worst-case analysis, FMECA, and power budget evaluations.
Oversee parts placement, layout, and long lead item management.
Ensure compliance with space industry standards for manufacturing and testing.
Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams, including structural, thermal, manufacturing, and QA specialists.
Support testing, debugging, and environmental testing of power electronics systems.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Minimum 5 years of experience designing high-frequency, high-efficiency power supplies and PCBs.
Knowledgeable about PCB manufacturing processes.
Expertise in “Full Bridge” power supply design and high-frequency power systems (200 kHz to 1 MHz).
Experience with synchronous rectifier MOS transistors (eGaN preferred).
Proficiency in PCB design software (Mentor Xpedition, PADS, OrCAD, PSPICE).
Strong analytical skills in FMECA, WCA, EMC, and related areas.
Knowledge of radiation effects and ruggedized designs considered an asset
Hands-on lab experience with test equipment such as oscilloscopes and network analyzers.
Fluent in French and English (Contact with customers outside Québec, work on English-language).

#IND1

Comments/Special Considerations:

Successful candidates must obtain and hold security clearance at the reliability status level, and pass security assessment for the Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and ITAR.

Benefits statement:

MDA provides competitive compensation and benefits packages for its employees at all locations. As a team member of MDA, you and your qualified dependents are eligible to participate in a benefit plan that ensures a comprehensive level of protection through competitive health care including; extended healthcare and flexible drug plans, dental and vision benefits, disability income protection, life insurance, group retirement savings plans; and an employee and family assistance program.

Equal opportunity statement:

MDA Ltd. is proud to provide accommodation(s) during the recruitment process. Should you require any accommodations, please indicate this on your application/cover letter and we will work with you to meet your accessibility needs.
