Original job description

English section of this bilingual listing.

About Us

At Mechasys , our XR Projector projects digital construction plans at 1:1 scale directly onto the job site, with millimetre precision and no guesswork. We merge optics, software, and embedded systems to help builders work faster and smarter. Based in Montreal, we're scaling fast and looking for the right people to help us get there.

The Role

We are seeking a hands-on Optical Systems Engineer - LiDAR and Laser Ranging to own the distance measurement subsystem at the heart of the XR Projector. The instrument currently relies on a commercial phase-shift rangefinder module; you will design the next generation optical ranging system that replaces it, from link budget and bench prototype through to a manufacturable, field-calibrated product. You will be the technical owner of ranging performance: range, precision, measurement rate, and how all three hold up in real site conditions. You will also contribute to improving the laser projection system.

Key Responsibilities

Ranging System Design

Own the ranging architecture: modulation scheme, wavelength, receiver topology, and optical layout.
Build and defend optical link budgets, and set specifications that are physically achievable.
Design the receive path: collection optics, filtering, and detector selection (APD, SiPM, PIN), and specify the analog front end with our electronics team.
Own laser safety for the ranging path under IEC 60825-1 and ANSI Z136.1, including interlock design.

Prototyping and Measurement

Stand up optical benches and run experiments with documented protocols and acceptance criteria.
Characterize the error terms that decide real accuracy: crosstalk, range walk, thermal drift, speckle.
Build measurement tooling and turn the data into usable noise models.

Integration and Productization

Work with firmware engineers on components such as signal processing, phase extraction, and the host interface.
Contribute to athermal mounting, boresight stability, and alignment tolerances.
Define per-unit factory calibration, and support manufacturing, field diagnostics, and compliance (IEC, CE, FCC).

Who You Are

5+ years developing LiDAR, laser rangefinding, or optical time-of-flight systems, or a closely related electro-optical instrument.
A degree in physics, electrical engineering, optical engineering, or engineering physics, or equivalent depth earned in industry.
You can build an optical link budget from first principles and explain, in photons, why a specification is or is not reachable.
Practical experience with photodetectors (APD, SiPM, PIN), their analog front ends, and both phase-shift and pulsed time-of-flight ranging.
At home on an optical bench and with lab instrumentation; you write Python to get answers from data.
You have designed to laser safety classification , not just read about it, and you document work so others can repeat it.

Nice to Have

Galvanometer or MEMS beam scanning, and the calibration that comes with it.
FPGA-based signal processing (Zynq, Vivado, HDL), or close collaboration with FPGA teams.
Surveying, metrology, or total stations, or another domain where millimetres are the unit of argument.
Optical design tools (Zemax, OpticStudio, Code V), design for manufacturability, and volume production.
Bilingual in French and English is a plus.

Why You'll Love It Here

Ownership: A subsystem that is yours end to end, from physics to production
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Equity: Stock options, own a piece of what you help build
Impact: Build tools that are transforming job sites worldwide
Flexibility: Flexible hours and remote-friendly environment
Time Off: 3 weeks vacation plus unlimited personal and sick days
Benefits: Full health, dental, vision, and professional development coverage
