Original job description
About the job
Location: Based in the Prairies, Alberta or Saskatchewan. Remote when you are not in community. Most of the current work is within a day's drive of Saskatoon, Prince Albert or Edmonton.
Type: Full-time, Permanent
Hours: Flexible. Our clients are in every province and territory, so some give-and-take on time zones comes with the job. Community events happen on evenings and weekends, and you will be at them.
Travel: This is an in-community role. Expect travel to be more than half of the job, with multi-day stays in community for gatherings, camps, engagement sessions and launches.
Start here
- We don't need someone to make decks that sit in a folder. We need someone who can design a program and get it running. The kind of person who turns "we've been talking about this for ten years" into "two hundred people came to the gathering."
- Once a Nation's funding is approved, you own it. You run the project to completion, keep Eve, our delivery platform, current, and keep the Nation informed. Some days you'll be on a call with Chief and Council. Some days you'll be setting up chairs in a community hall at seven in the morning. Every day, you're the reason the work in front of them is solid and on schedule.
- You step into a live portfolio on day one: language programs, cultural gatherings and powwows, youth and land-based programs, community safety and wellness plans, a community media toolkit, and the websites and communications that carry a Nation's story. This is an early role on a small team, so there's real room to grow into leading one.
About us
- melyn helps First Nations across Canada plan, fund, and build. Housing, infrastructure, governance, economic development, culture and language, the grants that pay for all of it, and the software that ties it together. We build long plans, win real funding, and stick around to deliver. When the work goes well, a community gets housing, a Nation owns a business, and a Council leads with confidence.
What you'd do
- Run your own client engagements end to end in alignment with the funded proposal: scope it, plan it, deliver it on time without anyone chasing you
- Be the person your clients talk to: build the relationship, run the calls, and keep Chief, Council, program directors and community staff moving
- Deliver programs in community: language and culture programming, youth and Elder gatherings, land-based camps, community safety and wellness planning, festivals and commemorations
- Lead the thinking and writing on the pieces that need it: program designs, engagement plans, safety and wellness plans, evaluation and final reports
- Own the Nation's public voice where we are funded to: websites, media toolkits, newsletters, video and photo projects, and the contractors who produce them
- Run the community engagement for the rest of the team's projects: land use plans, forest and climate plans, economic strategies and governance reviews all need members in a room, and you design the sessions, host them and bring back what the community said so the other Delivery Specialists can build on it
- Support Nation-run projects through their funder reporting: milestones, claims, activity reports and close out, so the next application is stronger than the last
- Proactively communicate internally with leadership and team mates to ensure the project keeps moving and stays on schedule
- Build budgets that hold up in front of Council, a funder, and an auditor
- Travel, host and facilitate: you plan the logistics, you are in the room, and you handle what goes sideways on the day
What we're looking for
- Three or so years in community programming, engagement, communications, event delivery, or project work inside or alongside First Nations communities. Have less, but real drive and a track record of getting things done? We'd still like to hear from you.
- A history of delivering programs and events on time and on budget, running clients directly, and keeping several projects moving at once
- Strong writing and comfort with numbers. You can write a program report a funder accepts first time, and a budget that survives scrutiny.
- Facilitation skills with Elders, youth, Council and staff in the same room, and the judgment to know when to speak and when to listen
- Based in Alberta or Saskatchewan, with a licence and a reliable vehicle, and able and willing to travel more than half the time, including remote communities, winter roads and small aircraft
- Steady in a room with senior people, and you don't wait around to be told what to do
- Deep respect for Indigenous self-determination, governance, cultural protocol and OCAP principles, and the humility to keep learning
Bonus points
- Past work inside a First Nation, tribal council or Indigenous organization: band office, health, education, language, communications or events
- An Indigenous language, or experience supporting language revitalization programs
- Communications or media production skills: web content, video, photography, social media, print. Comfort directing a contractor who does the rest.
- Experience with Canadian Heritage, MMIWG, Indigenous Languages, FGF, FCC or similar community program funders and their reporting
- Event or logistics experience: catering, honoraria, travel, venues, safety plans, Elder protocol
- Comfort with AI tools or building processes that help you work faster
Who you are
- You own every project end to end. Outreach goes out without anyone prompting you, updates land every week, and nothing sits waiting on you. When a Nation asks for something, it's back to them within a couple of days or they know why.
- People remember you after one visit. You show up early, stay late, eat what is served and come back when you said you would.
- You pick up new tools and new ways of working fast, and you would rather learn a better process this month than defend the old one next year. The reports, the budgets and the funder paperwork are already automated here. Your job is the room, the relationship, and a program people show up for.
- This is a fast paced, high output team. You solve availability gaps rather than explain them, because slow turnaround on Nation work costs trust. You want to look back in a few years and point at real things that exist because you made them happen.
What you get
- An annual bonus tied to company success and your own performance
- Health, dental and life coverage, flexible time off, and a vacation entitlement that grows with your tenure
- All travel paid in full, with per diems and recovery days after long trips
- Credit for what you ship, not how long you've been at it
- A team of experts to learn from and lean on, and a real path to leading as we grow
- Remote when you are not in community, from anywhere in Alberta or Saskatchewan
- A real platform behind you: melynBrain, our grant tools, an analyst bench, and document pipelines that take the grunt work off your plate
- The version you pasted was missing the cross-team engagement bullet. It is the sixth item under "What you'd do" above.
