NL Inclusive STEM Project aims to provide experiential learning opportunities for LEARN students, prospective K-12 teachers (PTs), and Internationally Educated Teachers (IETs) to help participants realize their full personal and professional potential. The project is delivered in partnership with NL Schools and a range of community organizations, such as the YMCA and public libraries, with the goal of expanding after-school STEM programs in NL Schools and/or community centers. With a specific emphasis on newcomer and refugee students, the primary objectives of the project are to provide LEARN students with experiential STEM and language learning opportunities to develop their interest in STEM subjects, postsecondary education, and STEM careers; and to connect prospective K-12 teachers with relevant supports and services to help them become inclusive STEM teachers in NL.
DUTIES
Reporting to the Project Lead, the Project Coordinator will coordinate project activities, including engaging prospective STEM teachers. The successful candidate will help build relationships with community partners and develop services and programs for LEARN students, PTs, and IETs. Primary duties include coordinating and overseeing the daily operations of the after-school programs across partner schools and community centers, addressing issues as they arise; assisting with and, in some cases, leading afterschool programs at partner NL Schools and community centers; developing program schedules, activities, and curriculum materials tailored to the needs of newcomer students; organizing special events, workshops, and family engagement activities; assisting with the development and maintenance of project media-related activities; assisting with the recruitment, training, and supervising STEM program leaders, volunteers, and program staff; supporting student registration, attendance tracking, and family communication, including arranging interpretation and translation support as needed; and performing other project duties as required. The role involves occasional local travel within the St. John’s area and may require work outside regular working hours.
Qualifications
Considerable experience (minimum 5 years) teaching at the K-12 level, including strong knowledge of STEM, experience in professional development of K-12 teachers, and knowledge of student supervision and data privacy best practices; completion of a bachelor’s degree in education is required; or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. The ideal candidate is organized, empathetic, and passionate about equity in education, with experience working with diverse cultural communities and an understanding of newcomer settlement challenges. A vulnerable sector check or background check, a valid driver's license, and reliable transportation are required. Additional language skills relevant to the newcomer community and prior experience supporting a school-based or education-related nonprofit program are considered assets. A master's degree is preferred.
