VISUAL ARTS STUDIO ASSISTANT (BAND LEVEL 8)
School of Fine Arts

DUTIES
Reporting to the Technical Director of the School of Fine Arts, the Visual Arts Studio Assistant will have primary responsibilities in the area of sculpture and fabrication; as well as providing assistance in other areas of the Visual Arts Program as needed, including supporting the Grenfell Art Gallery. The position plays a critical role in the delivery of the Visual Arts course curriculum by providing technical instruction for individuals and classes in the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programs, both in and out of class time. Sculpture responsibilities include, but are not limited to, ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of the sculpture studio facilities; supervising the FAB Shop (digital fabrication workshop); providing support and instruction in the areas of ceramics, woodworking, metalwork, casting, digital fabrication and alternative sculptural practices; maintaining studio inventory and budget tally; maintaining studio health, safety and cleanliness standards; and supervising students and student employees as required. As time and program priorities allow, the incumbent will provide studio support to faculty and visiting artists, as well as collaborate with other Visual Arts and School of Fine Arts employees across a range of School of Fine Arts projects. Additional duties include working in conjunction with the Grenfell Art Gallery to assist with exhibition installation; assisting with the production and output of promotional materials; and performing other related duties across the School of Fine Arts as required.
Qualifications
Experience (3-5 years) in a studio with a focus on sculpture; graduation with an undergraduate degree in fine arts or related discipline is required; or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. Knowledge of health and safety practices is essential for this role. The ideal candidate must have the ability to supervise and instruct students and assistants, as well as the ability to create and maintain a positive and welcoming studio environment. Demonstrated proficiency in working with tools, materials and sculptural processes, along with proficiency in 2D and 3D imaging and modelling software and the ability to operate digital fabrication equipment such as lasers, 3D printers and 3D scanners is preferred, coupled with a strong interest in exploring new products and materials.
SALARY $65,079 - $76,340 per annum (CUPE Local 1615)
