Who we are. At Mercer Mass Timber we are exceptional people making mass timber for a more sustainable world. We are North America’s largest Mass Timber Manufacturer, with facilities in Penticton, British Columbia, Spokane Valley, Washington, and Conway, Arkansas with a combined annual production capacity of over 255,000 cubic metres of mass timber. Mercer has operations in Canada, Germany, and the United States.

Position Description

The Senior DfMA Designer plays a key role within the VDC/Engineering group, reporting directly to the Fabrication Design Lead. The role carries complex mass timber assemblies from 3D modeling through shop drawing review, bringing production logic and DfMA methodology into detailing decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead 3D modeling and detailing of complex mass timber assemblies, ensuring production deliverables meet project timelines.
  • Guide and mentor Fabrication Designers and junior team members in Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles optimized for CLT and Glulam fabrication.
  • Support process, template, catalog, and modeling standard improvements in collaboration with the Fabrication Design Lead to drive procedural efficiency.
  • Enforce DfMA approach and integrate factory manufacturing capabilities and CNC code requirements directly into detailing workflows.
  • Review and approve detailer models, single-piece shop drawings, hardware/steel lists, and erection packages prior to release.
  • Maintain and execute quality control checklists for OFA, IFF, and production release stages.
  • Review project and process deficiencies, assisting with corrective action documentation and follow-up.
  • Collaborate closely with Project Managers, BIM Coordinators, Specialty Engineers, and Estimating teams.
  • Serve as a primary contact for DfMA matters during Design Assist activities and oversee integration of 2D/3D MEP penetrations and structural interfaces.
  • Assist in identifying scope gaps, drafting RFIs, and supporting technical baseline data for change orders.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree or Diploma in Architectural Technology, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related technical field preferred but those with equivalent practical work experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in 3D modeling, structural detailing, and DfMA workflows for complex timber structures.
  • Proven expertise in mass timber design (CLT and Glulam), connection detailing, and CNC code generation.
  • Advanced proficiency in BIM and CAD software, specifically Cadwork, Revit, or similar 3D modeling tools.
  • Strong understanding of North American building codes, structural drawings, and hardware/steel connection detailing.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior designers, review shop drawing packages, and maintain quality control standards.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills with project managers, engineers, and fabrication teams.

Salary and Benefits

  • The salary for this position is $85,000 - $100,000 . Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
  • Our group benefits package, which has no waiting period, includes extended health and dental benefits, in addition to a Health Care Spending Account and a fitness allowance.
  • RRSP - We provide a competitive RRSP contribution plan, with base contributions made by Mercer which can be supplemented with personal contributions matched by the company up to a certain %.
