Original job description
Every building we ship starts with something we buy. As our Procurement Specialist, you will own purchasing at Metalex from end to end: getting the right materials to the right job at the right time and building the supplier partnerships and sourcing strategy that keep us competitive as we grow.
The OpportunityThis is a hands-on role with real influence. You will run purchasing day to day, from purchase orders through vendor follow-up and receiving, and you will play a leading role in shaping how Metalex buys: our supplier strategy, our reporting, and the systems behind them. You will regularly work with our operating teams, report to the General Manager, and collaborate with the leadership team on the sourcing decisions that matter most.
Where You’ll Focus First- Running purchasing with precision, so every order is placed, confirmed, and delivered where and when the job needs it.
- Assessing our major spend categories and setting baselines to track performance and savings over time.
- Owning a system that keeps qualified supplier options in place for our critical and hard-to-replace materials.
- Working with Estimating and Project Management to plan purchasing ahead of demand, using our project pipeline and current market insights.
- Strengthening the purchasing process so it scales with the business.
- 5+ years of purchasing or procurement experience in manufacturing, construction, or the service side of energy, with ownership of both daily execution and strategic sourcing. Candidates with 3 to 5 years who can demonstrate strong sourcing experience are encouraged to apply.
- A confident negotiator who builds supplier relationships that last and holds suppliers to a high standard.
- Comfortable with the everyday math of purchasing: unit conversions, quote comparisons, discounts, landed cost, and a working feel for the market forces behind pricing, such as economies of scale and supply and demand.
- Able to read shop orders and bills of materials.
- Comfortable with Sage or a similar ERP, plus Excel and Outlook.
- Organized, detail-focused, and relentless about follow-through.
- The judgment to know when the lowest price is not the best value, and the confidence to say so.
- Assets: familiarity with mill test reports and CSA A660/A277 requirements; experience building or improving purchasing processes or systems; a procurement or supply chain designation such as SCMP.
Purchasing matters here. It is not a back-office function. What you buy becomes buildings for energy, industrial, and agricultural customers across Canada.
Real influence, close to the top. You will work with our General Manager daily and have a direct line to our CEO. Good ideas move from suggestion to action quickly.
Room to shape the role. We are growing, and you will have the chance to shape the function, not just operate it.
A place to grow. We promote from within and invest in developing our people. This role grows as the company does.
A close-knit team. We are a tight, hands-on team where people know each other’s work and pull together to get jobs out the door. You will work alongside experienced people in estimating, project management, production, and shipping and receiving, and they will count on you as much as you count on them.
