Original job description

Overview

Do you want to help build the infrastructure powering real-time communication experiences across Microsoft Teams, Copilot, and Outlook?

The Real-Time Communications (RTC) Runtime Infrastructure team within Intelligent Conversation and Communication Cloud (IC3) develops and operates the foundational infrastructure supporting real-time communication experiences across Microsoft products. Our team focuses on service orchestration, reliability, security, and performance for services supporting millions of calls and meetings every day.

We are investing in emerging technologies to strengthen security, improve performance, and advance AI-driven engineering. Our work includes preparing services for post-quantum cryptography, improving video workload efficiency through hardware acceleration and low-level software optimization, and developing agentic workflows that use AI to monitor service health, diagnose issues, and support automated remediation with appropriate engineering oversight.

As a Software Engineer II on our team, you will design, develop, test, and maintain components of highly scalable and reliable cloud infrastructure. You will solve technical challenges involving distributed systems, performance, security, and service reliability while exploring and applying emerging technologies. You will collaborate with engineers and partner teams to deliver solutions that improve the performance, efficiency, and reliability of services operating at global scale.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees, we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day, we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, test, debug, and maintain software components for highly scalable and reliable infrastructure supporting real-time communication and Copilot experiences.
Contribute to security improvements across cloud services, including initiatives related to secure communication protocols and post-quantum cryptography readiness.
Develop and optimize software to improve service performance, efficiency, and resource utilization, including opportunities involving hardware acceleration and low-level software optimization.
Develop and improve AI-driven workflows that leverage telemetry, logs, and traces to monitor service health, identify issues, support diagnostics, and automate remediation with appropriate engineering oversight.
Investigate and troubleshoot software and production issues, identify root causes, and implement improvements that strengthen service reliability, security, and operational efficiency.
Collaborate with engineers and partner teams to understand technical requirements, contribute to design decisions, identify dependencies, and deliver reliable solutions across supported services and platforms.
Participate in the team's Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) on-call rotation, responding to live-site incidents, supporting mitigation and resolution, and contributing to improvements in service reliability and supportability.
Contribute to code reviews, technical documentation, testing, and engineering best practices while identifying opportunities to improve software quality, maintainability, and development efficiency.
