Original job description

Company Description Kovatera is a privately owned Canadian Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) based in Sudbury, Ontario, a historic mining district. Since beginning manufacturing in 1999, the company has expanded into a modern 35,000 sq/ft facility and established a strong reputation in the underground mining industry, particularly across Canada. Kovatera designs and builds heavy-duty underground utility vehicles from the ground up to withstand demanding duty cycles and applications. Its KT Series and flagship KM Series vehicles are available in diesel and electric drive configurations, focused on reducing Total Ownership Costs and improving return on investment for customers. Kovatera supports its products through a dealer network across Canada, the USA, and multiple international markets including India, Australia, Mexico, Indonesia, Sweden, and Turkey.
Role Description The Mechanical Designer role at Kovatera is a full-time, on-site position based in Sudbury, ON. This role is responsible for designing and developing mechanical components and systems for heavy-duty underground utility vehicles, using CAD tools to create 3D models, detailed drawings, and assembly documentation. The Mechanical Designer collaborates closely with engineering, production, and service teams to refine designs, address manufacturability and serviceability, and ensure compliance with safety and industry standards. Day-to-day tasks include updating drawings and BOMs, supporting prototype builds, participating in design reviews, and resolving design-related issues from the field. The role also involves continuous improvement of existing products and contributing to new product development initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Strong CAD and mechanical design skills (e.g., 3D modeling, detail drafting, GD&T) for heavy equipment or industrial applications.
  • Experience with mechanical systems such as chassis, structures, powertrain, hydraulics, or electrical integration in mobile equipment.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards, manufacturing processes (fabrication, machining, welding), and design for manufacturability and serviceability.
  • Ability to interpret technical specifications, read and create engineering documentation, and manage Bills of Material.
  • Relevant education, such as a diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Experience in underground mining equipment or heavy-duty vehicles is an asset.
  • Proficiency with common office software and willingness to learn internal systems and processes.
