Original job description
Senior Personal Injury Law Clerk
Downtown Toronto
Our client, a highly regarded boutique litigation firm in downtown Toronto, is seeking an experienced Senior Law Clerk to join its plaintiff-side personal injury team. This is an excellent opportunity for a clerk who understands the full lifecycle of a file, can move matters forward proactively, and enjoys taking meaningful ownership of sophisticated client work.
The Opportunity
Working directly with a partner in a close-knit team, the successful candidate will help manage files from intake through resolution. The role is suited to someone who sees the bigger picture, anticipates next steps, and is comfortable taking initiative while delivering thoughtful, high-quality support to lawyers and clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and advance plaintiff-side personal injury and medical malpractice files through each stage of litigation.
- Draft and prepare pleadings, correspondence, affidavits, mediation briefs, productions, undertakings and other litigation materials.
- Organize and review medical, expert, employment and damages-related records and maintain clear, accurate file materials.
- Monitor limitation periods, procedural deadlines, undertakings and outstanding productions.
- Coordinate discoveries, mediations, pre-trials and trials, including scheduling and preparation of supporting materials.
- Communicate professionally with clients, experts, opposing counsel, insurers, healthcare providers and other parties.
- Identify next steps, follow up proactively and help ensure files continue progressing efficiently.
- Work collaboratively with lawyers and fellow clerks while maintaining strong individual ownership of assigned matters.
Qualifications
- Ideally 5+ years of law clerk experience in plaintiff-side personal injury; the quality and depth of experience will be given greater weight than an exact number of years.
- Strong understanding of how a plaintiff-side litigation file progresses from intake through resolution.
- Experience with personal injury and/or medical malpractice matters; exposure to product liability, slip and fall, long-term disability, class actions or other tort claims is an asset.
- Law Clerk diploma or equivalent relevant training and experience.
- Excellent organization, drafting, communication and time-management skills.
- Sound judgment, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing deadlines independently.
- A proactive, client-focused approach and genuine interest in working within a collaborative boutique environment.
What the Firm Offers
- Hybrid schedule with two regular in-office days per week; one additional in-office day may be required initially for training.
- Three weeks of paid time off to start, with the opportunity to progress toward four weeks.
- Firm closure between Christmas and New Year’s, in addition to regular paid time off.
- Comprehensive benefits and a discretionary bonus.
- No billable-hour target.
- Competitive compensation, flexible based on experience.
- Direct partner mentorship, small file teams and meaningful ownership over client matters.
