Geotechnical Laboratory Supervisor
With over 30 years of experience in the Environmental Engineering industry, our client is looking for a Geotechnical Laboratory Supervisor to join their team in Vaughan, to oversee the day-to-day operations of the geotechnical laboratory and ensure that all testing is completed accurately, efficiently and in accordance with applicable standards and quality requirements. They will be responsible for supervising laboratory staff, coordinating testing programs, maintaining laboratory equipment, overseeing quality control procedures, and ensuring the laboratory remains compliant with applicable CCIL certification requirements.
Role and Responsibilities
- Manage daily geotechnical laboratory operations, workflow, testing schedules, and sample handling.
- Perform, supervise, and review soil, aggregate, and asphalt testing, including Proctor, Atterberg Limits, sieve/grain size, hydrometer, CBR, consolidation, direct shear, density, moisture, and specific gravity testing.
- Maintain CCIL certification and ensure compliance with CSA, ASTM, AASHTO, LS/OPSS, and CCIL requirements.
- Coordinate CCIL inspections, proficiency testing, audits, corrective actions, SOPs, and quality-control documentation.
- Ensure laboratory equipment is calibrated, maintained, and properly documented.
- Supervise, train, and mentor laboratory technicians while monitoring workload and productivity.
- Work closely with geotechnical engineers, project managers, and field staff to coordinate testing requirements and deadlines.
- Investigate testing discrepancies and support resolution of technical issues.
- Maintain laboratory inventory, equipment, supplies, and a safe, organized work environment.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in a geotechnical laboratory, with supervisory or lead-hand experience preferred.
- Strong practical knowledge of geotechnical soil, aggregate and asphalt testing.
- Experience with CCIL-certified laboratories and CCIL requirements.
- Familiarity with applicable CSA, ASTM, AASHTO, LS/OPSS, and other relevant testing standards.
- Experience with laboratory quality-control procedures.
- Strong understanding of laboratory equipment calibration and maintenance.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate test results.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple testing programs and deadlines.
