Reporting to the General Manager, Energy & Power Innovation Centre (EPIC), the Applied IoT and Data Specialist will serve as a senior resource to projects in the areas of software development related to data acquisition, Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, and systems integration. This position will be responsible for the providing technical expertise during all the different project stages, from scope definition to delivery.
Our projects involve industry partners, mostly Small and Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs), looking for integrated solutions related to data pipelines and value-added data processing that can help create and/or upgrade their potential and existing products and services. The Applied IoT and Data Specialist will help scope and deliver projects where industry partners are looking to collect distributed, cost-effective, and/or remote information to support building commercial/industrial services and products.
The incumbent liaises with EPIC technical staff, Faculty members, students and industry partners to scope and deliver applied research projects in the areas of energy, software development, data acquisition, and/or electrical areas.
What you’ll be doing:
Data Analytics and Software Development: Lead the development of new and/or updated systems, including but not limited to:
- Design, develop, and implement IoT and data analytics software solutions in line with applied research and industry projects.
- Build and maintain Python-based ETL pipelines covering the full data lifecycle: raw data ingestion from IoT streams, MQTT, REST APIs, and file-based sources (CSV, PDF, XLSX); data cleaning and validation; transformation and normalization; data modelling and structuring for analytical use; and loading into cloud storage and databases.
- Analyze technical problems and evaluate software solutions; recommend and implement the most appropriate architecture, tools, or approach based on project requirements and constraints.
- Utilize cloud-based solutions including AWS IoT Core, EC2, S3, Athena, and Kafka for data acquisition, processing, and storage for IoT-related projects.
- Design and manage relational and NoSQL databases; define data schemas and models optimized for efficient querying, storage, and downstream analytics.
- Develop and maintain RESTful APIs in Python to support internal application layers and external system integrations with industry partners.
- Design and develop frontend UI components and interactive live dashboards using Plotly and Grafana, delivering real-time data visualization and actionable insights to end users.
- Lead full-stack development of applied research software prototypes, owning the end-to-end process from raw data acquisition through to user-facing interfaces.
- Setup and maintain efficient communication between hardware and software components based on industrial protocols such as MQTT and REST.
- Troubleshoot diverse software and cloud systems in the areas of data pipelines, IoT communications, and systems integration.
Planning, Design and Standards:
- Works with internal and external stakeholders to identify and document development requirements for applied research projects throughout the project lifetime (scope definition, implementation, wrap-up).
- Develops and presents proof of concepts for new, existing or proposed IoT, data communications, software and hardware.
- Participates in project meetings with business and technical stakeholders to validate requirements and design specifications/standards.
- Responsible to create, edit and modify technical and end-user documentation for applied research projects.
- Ensures the relevant standards are followed when designing and testing software/hardware prototypes.
- Research and propose new technologies for continuous improvement.
Lab Responsibilities:
- Mentor part-time and co-op students from diverse programs including software, electrical and energy programs.
- Support EPIC staff and students with hardware and software equipment issues within the lab.
- Serve as EPIC’s key technical support link with Mohawk IT to manage EPIC related assets. Coordinate hardware and software lab updates.
Other duties as assigned.
What you’ll bring to the role:
- A minimum of 3 years of post-secondary education in Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Information Technology, programming design and techniques, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5 years of experience with advanced software and data analytics tools such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, SQL, AWS cloud services (IoT Core, EC2, S3, Athena, Kafka), ETL pipeline development, RESTful API development, full-stack web application development, relational and NoSQL database design, ahfgnd data visualization tools including Plotly and Grafana.
