Job Title: Design Review Technologist

Position Overview

We are seeking a Design Review Technologist to support the coordination, technical review, and administration of engineering design submissions for major transit and infrastructure projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing engineering drawings, coordinating multidisciplinary design reviews, ensuring compliance with established design standards, and managing technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

This role requires a strong understanding of engineering design principles, construction practices, and technical documentation, along with excellent organizational and stakeholder coordination skills.

Key Responsibilities

Design Review & Technical Coordination

  • Review engineering and architectural design submissions to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with applicable design standards, project requirements, and established procedures.
  • Evaluate designs for safety, constructability, maintainability, and operational requirements.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design reviews involving architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and other engineering stakeholders.
  • Consolidate and analyze technical review comments, identifying inconsistencies, design conflicts, and potential impacts across disciplines.
  • Work closely with project managers, designers, consultants, and internal stakeholders to resolve technical comments and obtain necessary approvals and sign-offs.
  • Identify and coordinate requirements for design standard variances where applicable.

Third-Party Development Reviews

  • Review technical submissions from external developers proposing construction or development projects above or adjacent to existing transit infrastructure.
  • Assess submissions for compliance with applicable design standards, development guidelines, and technical requirements.
  • Coordinate reviews with relevant engineering disciplines and operational departments to identify potential impacts on existing infrastructure.
  • Compile and communicate technical review comments to external stakeholders within established response timelines.
  • Review developer responses and coordinate the resolution and closure of outstanding technical issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of external submissions, review comments, and development histories.

Design Standards & Documentation

  • Support the review, coordination, and revision of engineering design standards and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate stakeholder reviews of updated design standards and consolidate feedback from multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Identify conflicting requirements, inconsistencies, and potential impacts associated with proposed design standard revisions.
  • Maintain organized technical records and ensure compliance with established document control procedures.

As-Built Drawings & CADD Coordination

  • Coordinate the preparation and completion of as-built drawings for assigned infrastructure and construction projects.
  • Review construction record drawings against original Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings to identify changes and discrepancies.
  • Compile design modifications and coordinate updates with engineering designers, consultants, and CADD personnel.
  • Review revised CADD drawings to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with drawing preparation standards.
  • Track drawing revisions and communicate completion status to project management and document control teams.

Project Administration & Reporting

  • Support the administration of engineering design review processes.
  • Coordinate with external stakeholders regarding access to facility drawings, including confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) requirements.
  • Maintain secure records of technical submissions, review comments, and project documentation.
  • Prepare monthly progress and status reports covering design reviews, development reviews, One-Time Work Orders (OTWOs), and design standards activities.
  • Coordinate administrative processes associated with the release of technical drawings and related payments.
  • Participate in required safety training and comply with organizational safety, accessibility, and workplace policies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

  • University degree or college diploma in Architecture, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience in engineering design review, technical coordination, drafting, construction, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering disciplines and their interrelationships, particularly within transit or infrastructure environments.
  • Detailed knowledge of Bentley MicroStation CADD software, preferably supported by several years of drafting experience.
  • Experience reviewing engineering drawings, technical specifications, construction documentation, and design standards.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, applicable building codes, engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and construction contract documentation.
  • Familiarity with engineering design office procedures, technical records management, and project management processes.
  • Understanding of technical specification development, tendering procedures, and construction contract documents.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Bentley MicroStation, with working knowledge of PowerPoint.
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to develop and maintain databases and technical tracking systems.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively across multiple technical disciplines and stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, track technical deliverables, and meet project deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registration as a Licensed Engineering Technologist, Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), or Architect in Ontario is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience supporting transit infrastructure, transportation engineering, or large-scale construction projects is an asset.
  • Familiarity with transit design standards, multidisciplinary design reviews, and third-party development coordination is an asset.
