Senior UX Designer
Location: Toronto, ON
Work Model: Onsite – 5 days/week
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior UX Designer to lead user-centred design initiatives for web and mobile digital services.
The successful candidate will have strong hands-on experience in UX/UI design, user research, stakeholder workshops, wireframing, prototyping, usability testing, Figma, Canva, accessibility, and cross-functional collaboration.
This role requires someone who can manage the full UX lifecycle - from user research and discovery through design, prototyping, testing, stakeholder alignment, and implementation support.
Key Responsibilities
- Create effective, user-friendly, accessible, and visually appealing interfaces for web and mobile applications.
- Lead end-to-end UX projects from discovery and research through design, testing, and implementation.
- Define and facilitate UX workshops, stakeholder alignment sessions, and design workshops.
- Conduct and manage user research including:
- User interviews
- Surveys and questionnaires
- Stakeholder consultations
- Usability testing
- User feedback sessions
- Translate research findings into:
- Personas
- Sitemaps
- User flows
- Customer/user journey maps
- Wireframes
- Mockups
- Interactive prototypes
- Design and iterate product functionality based on user testing and stakeholder feedback.
- Create responsive UX/UI designs optimized across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
- Identify usability and design problems and develop practical, intuitive solutions.
- Make strategic UX decisions for existing and new product functionality.
- Work closely with developers, QA specialists, product teams, business stakeholders, and other project teams.
- Communicate design concepts, decisions, and development processes clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Prepare clear documentation, reports, assessments, and design recommendations.
- Manage multiple priorities and deliverables while meeting project deadlines.
Must-Have Qualifications
- Senior-level experience as a UX Designer, UI/UX Designer, Interaction Designer, Product Designer, or similar role.
- Strong experience creating GUI designs based on user interaction, usability, and performance.
- Demonstrated experience designing web and mobile applications.
- Ability to independently define and lead UX projects.
- Strong experience facilitating:
- UX workshops
- Design workshops
- Stakeholder alignment sessions
- Business/user consultations
- Experience managing end-to-end user research, from participant recruitment through research synthesis.
- Hands-on experience conducting:
- User interviews
- Surveys
- Questionnaires
- User consultations
- Usability testing
- Strong experience creating:
- Wireframes
- User flows
- User journeys
- Sitemaps
- Mockups
- Prototypes
- Strong hands-on experience with Figma.
- Experience with Canva and similar design/prototyping tools.
- Experience iterating designs based on usability testing and user feedback.
- Strong understanding of web development technologies and their design limitations.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with developers, QA specialists, business stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and stakeholder relationships.
Accessibility Requirements
Experience designing accessible digital services, including:
- Accessibility-first UX/UI design
- WCAG 2.1 AA
- Accessibility testing
- Accessible interaction patterns and components
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Previous Government of Ontario / OPS experience.
- Broader Canadian public-sector experience.
- Experience with the Ontario Design System.
- Knowledge of the Ontario Digital Service Standard / Digital Service Standard.
- Experience solving complex UX challenges involving legacy systems.
- Experience working within complex stakeholder, governance, and approval environments.
- Strong UI/UX expertise involving:
- Wireframing
- Surveys
- Questionnaires
- Consultations
- User research
