Primary Objectives:

We are seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking finance leader to join the organization as Vice President, Corporate Controller at our Head Office in downtown Toronto. Reporting to and partnering closely with the CFO, this role will provide enterprise-level financial leadership across accounting operations, financial reporting, technical accounting, controls, regulatory reporting, audit, tax, treasury, pension and finance transformation activities. The successful candidate will bring strong judgment, disciplined execution and a continuous improvement mindset, while playing a lead role in driving finance transformation, aligning local finance priorities with GSI objectives and Munich Re standards, and positioning the function to support evolving enterprise, regulatory and business needs.

This includes helping the Finance function modernize through stronger data management, process automation, improved end-to-end processes and responsible use of AI-enabled tools. This leader will translate complex financial, operational and regulatory information into clear insight for senior management, the Board of Directors and other stakeholders, while developing a high-performing team that delivers accurate, timely and value-added analysis in support of company performance and strategic decision-making.

Job Responsibilities:

Serve as a senior finance leader and trusted advisor to the CFO, CEO, senior management and internal stakeholders on financial reporting, accounting, controls, regulatory and business performance matters.
Lead the Corporate Controller function, including accounting operations, financial close, technical accounting, financial statements, management reporting and related governance processes.
Prepare and administer financial reporting in accordance with IFRS, US GAAP and applicable regulatory reporting requirements, ensuring accuracy, timeliness and appropriate documentation.
Oversee internal controls, accounting policies, financial data quality and process discipline, strengthening the reliability, transparency and usefulness of financial information.
Play a lead role in driving finance transformation across the local Finance function, partnering with Finance, Risk, Business Transformation, IT, Data & Analytics and business stakeholders to modernize processes, improve reporting capabilities and identify opportunities for automation, workflow improvement and AI-enabled productivity.
Champion responsible AI and data-enabled finance practices, including appropriate governance, confidentiality, access controls, validation, human oversight and alignment with applicable company policies and regulatory expectations.
Develop clear financial insights, observations and recommendations for senior management, committees and the Board of Directors, including materials that highlight financial results, emerging issues, risks and opportunities.
Support the CFO on strategic initiatives, business planning, transformation projects, governance matters and cross-functional initiatives that advance company objectives and strengthen enterprise performance.
Act as the Finance lead for global initiatives that impact the Finance department, representing local finance requirements, coordinating implementation activities and ensuring alignment with GSI objectives, Munich Re standards, enterprise objectives and departmental priorities.
Build and maintain strong partnerships with direct and global parent organizations, including GSI and Munich Re stakeholders, to support knowledge sharing, group reporting, best practices and coordinated implementation of finance, data and technology improvements.
Oversee investment, pension, tax and cash management reporting activities, including forecasting of the company’s cash position and escalation of relevant matters where appropriate.
Manage relationships with external and internal auditors, prepare and support audit requirements, and oversee the annual audit process to ensure successful and efficient completion.
Lead, coach and develop finance team members, creating an accountable, inclusive and continuous-improvement-oriented culture that supports professional growth and high-quality execution.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or a related field is required; professional accounting designation is required. Additional qualifications such as MBA, CFA or CIP are considered an asset.
Progressive finance, controllership, financial reporting and oversight experience, ideally within a P&C insurance or regulated financial services environment.
Strong technical accounting knowledge, including experience with IFRS, US GAAP, financial statement preparation, accounting policy interpretation and regulatory reporting.
Demonstrated ability to lead financial close, audit, control, reporting and analysis processes with discipline, accuracy and sound professional judgment.
Experience leading finance transformation, improving finance processes, data quality, controls and reporting, and aligning local implementation with broader GSI and Munich Re priorities, with an interest in automation, analytics and responsible adoption of AI-enabled tools.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly to executives, Board members, auditors, regulators and cross-functional stakeholders.
Strong financial modeling, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to convert data into actionable insight and practical recommendations.
Hands-on leadership style with the willingness to engage in detailed execution while also setting strategic direction and building scalable processes.
Proven ability to motivate, lead and develop teams, while building collaborative relationships across all levels of the organization and with global stakeholders.
High level of integrity, professionalism, confidentiality and risk awareness, with a commitment to strong governance, compliance and continuous improvement.
