The Opportunity
We are seeking a
Network Technologist with RF, microwave, telecommunications and/or satellite communications experience to support a mission-critical satellite communications network operating across North America.
Working within a
Network Operations Centre (NOC) and satellite ground-segment environment, you will help monitor, maintain, troubleshoot and support
satellite gateways, RF/microwave infrastructure, antennas, telecommunications networks and associated monitoring and control systems.
This is a hands-on operational position supporting a
24/7 satellite network and is well suited to someone who enjoys troubleshooting, working with RF and telecommunications equipment, and taking ownership of network availability and performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Support 24/7 satellite network operations through scheduled shift work and rotational on-call coverage.
- Perform routine maintenance, system verification, troubleshooting and repair of satellite ground-segment equipment.
- Support satellite antennas, including 11-metre, 7-metre and smaller dish systems.
- Maintain and troubleshoot RF and microwave equipment, including:
- TWTA and SSPA amplifiers
- Upconverters and downconverters
- RF switching systems
- Waveguides and filters
- High-precision time and frequency references
- Monitor & Control (M&C) systems
- Analyze and troubleshoot RF signals using spectrum analyzers, power meters, oscilloscopes and satellite carrier-monitoring systems.
- Monitor, demand and assign voice and data services over satellite networks.
- Support network and telecommunications links, including IP routers and switches.
- Monitor and control remote equipment using SNMP, socket interfaces and proprietary M&C protocols.
- Support multiple satellite gateways, with the majority of work performed from the Ottawa location.
- Troubleshoot antenna tracking systems and associated mechanical/support infrastructure.
- Create and maintain technical drawings and documentation for RF communications equipment.
- Prepare written technical reports and maintain Tier-2 operational procedures and documentation.
- Participate in Incident, Change and Problem Management processes.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives involving network reliability, operational quality and troubleshooting processes.
- Participate in occasional travel to satellite monitoring sites, gateways and U.S. operational locations.
Required Qualifications
- 3-year technical diploma/degree, Associate Degree or comparable technical education in electronics, telecommunications, networking, RF or a related discipline.
- Approximately 5+ years of relevant industry experience, ideally involving RF, microwave, satellite or telecommunications technologies.
- Practical knowledge of RF and satellite communications technologies.
- Experience operating spectrum analyzers and related RF test equipment.
- Strong diagnostic, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of IP networks and telecommunications protocols.
- Understanding of active and passive RF/microwave equipment.
- Ability to work effectively in a mission-critical NOC / 24x7 operational environment.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively within a technical team.
- Strong attention to detail, organization and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Willingness and ability to work rotating days, evenings and weekends, as well as participate in a 24/7 rotational on-call schedule.
- Must be able to carry a mobile phone and respond to network emergencies while on call.
- Must hold or be eligible to obtain a Canadian passport and be available for occasional U.S. travel.
Security / Export-Control Requirements The successful candidate must be able to satisfy eligibility requirements associated with the
Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and applicable
ITAR/export-control requirements. Candidates should be prepared to provide appropriate government-issued identification and documentation and consent to the required security/background assessment.
Nice to Have Experience in any of the following would be considered an asset:
- Linux operating systems and remote terminal/command-line administration.
- Programming or scripting with Python, Golang, C/C++ or MATLAB.
- Test automation software and automated technical testing.
- Data analysis, monitoring or visualization using Grafana, Splunk, MATLAB, OriginLab or Python.
- ServiceNow or comparable ITIL-based Incident, Change and Problem Management platforms.
- Monitor & Control (M&C) systems.
- SNMP, socket interfaces and remote equipment monitoring/control.
- IP routing and switching.
- Antenna tracking and satellite ground-station systems.
- Satellite carrier-monitoring systems.
Physical & Working Environment This is a
hands-on technical position, not a desk-only NOC role. The position may require working within Network Operations Centres, satellite gateways and equipment environments. Responsibilities can include standing, walking, climbing stairs or ladders, accessing satellite dishes and equipment, working at heights, kneeling, crouching and working around technical infrastructure. Candidates must be comfortable occasionally lifting or moving equipment weighing up to approximately
40 lbs. The environment may have moderate-to-high noise levels where appropriate
PPE will be provided.
Compensation & Benefits
The position offers a competitive total compensation package, including:
- $85,000–$100,000 CAD base salary, depending on experience.
- 3 weeks' vacation to start, increasing with tenure + Flexdays + Sickdays.
- Competitive RRSP/pension contribution matching.
- Premium compensation for qualifying holiday work.
- Additional time-off provisions associated with holiday scheduling.
- Comprehensive employee benefits.
- Training and ongoing technical support.
- Onsite parking and gym facilities.
Ideal Candidate We are particularly interested in candidates who combine
hands-on RF/satellite knowledge with strong troubleshooting and network operations experience. You should be comfortable working around physical satellite and telecommunications infrastructure, responding to operational incidents, using RF test equipment, supporting IP/network technologies and participating in a true
24/7 NOC environment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking a
long-term career in satellite communications and network operations who brings initiative, practical problem-solving skills, sound judgment and a strong team-oriented work ethic.
