We are seeking an experienced Node.js API Developer (AWS) to support a major Canadian financial institution’s Digital Core modernization initiative.
The successful candidate will join an API Modernization Pod focused on developing and enhancing secure, scalable B2C APIs. The project includes implementing updated API security protocols, particularly authentication and authorization for key banking services such as Account Summary and Transfers.
This is a hands-on development role involving Node.js, AWS serverless technologies, API integrations and event-driven architectures.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain high-performance Node.js applications, APIs and microservices on AWS.
- Implement API security enhancements, including authentication and authorization.
- Build serverless and event-driven solutions using AWS Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, SNS and DynamoDB.
- Design and implement scalable API integrations between services, systems and third-party platforms.
- Develop asynchronous messaging solutions using SQS and SNS.
- Design and optimize DynamoDB schemas, partitioning and indexing strategies.
- Write clean, maintainable and well-tested code, conduct code reviews and troubleshoot technical issues.
- Optimize application performance, Lambda execution and AWS resource utilization.
- Collaborate with DevOps teams on CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and monitoring.
- Create technical documentation and mentor junior developers.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, including 3+ years of hands-on Node.js development.
- 1+ year of financial services experience, with an understanding of retail banking and working within a large organization.
- Strong production experience with Node.js and Express.js, NestJS or similar frameworks.
- Hands-on AWS experience with:
- Lambda, including serverless function development and optimization.
- API Gateway, including REST/HTTP APIs, authentication, authorization, rate limiting and versioning.
- SQS and SNS, including asynchronous messaging, dead-letter queues and publish-subscribe patterns.
- DynamoDB, including table design, indexing, query optimization and stream processing.
- Strong API design, integration and security experience, including RESTful APIs.
- Deep understanding of asynchronous programming, promises, async/await and event-driven development.
- Experience with NoSQL database design.
- Proficiency with Git, collaborative development workflows, unit testing and integration testing.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools, including GitHub Copilot and Claude Code, to improve development efficiency and build reusable capabilities.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- AWS Certified Developer Associate or AWS Solutions Architect certification.
- TypeScript development experience.
- Docker, ECS or Fargate.
- Infrastructure as code using CloudFormation, AWS SAM or Terraform.
- CloudWatch, X-Ray and application logging.
- RabbitMQ or Kafka.
- GraphQL API development and optimization.
- Agile/Scrum delivery experience.
- Experience with multi-region deployments, distributed systems and disaster recovery.
- Contributions to Node.js or AWS-related open-source projects.
