Original job description
Lead the architecture and technical direction of System Operations (SysOps) software for a mission-critical satellite communications program. Translate operational, security, and system requirements into scalable solutions, maximizing reuse of existing platform capabilities while defining enhancements where necessary. Ottawa, Ontario; minimum four days per week on-site.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture and Technical Leadership
- Define and maintain end-to-end SysOps software architecture and translate operational concepts and system requirements into interfaces, services, workflows, and deployment requirements.
- Assess reusable existing platform capabilities and required program-specific enhancements.
- Establish architectural principles, design patterns, and standards across SysOps applications; lead reviews and document decisions, assumptions, dependencies, and risks.
- Align solution architecture with the wider satellite system architecture.
- Define capabilities to provision, configure, monitor, control, and support military Ka-band services.
- Design application-level and cross-application architecture for operational workflows, service management, fault management, performance monitoring, reporting, and administration.
- Define enhancements and integrations across SysOps and other operational systems.
- Ensure visibility of service status, network performance, alarms, events, logs, and customer-impacting issues; specify operational automation.
- Define APIs, data models, messaging interfaces, and integration patterns.
- Coordinate with BSS, user terminal, network engineering, cybersecurity, Network Operations, Satellite Operations, and Systems Engineering teams.
- Maintain traceability from requirements to architecture, interfaces, and deliveries; identify and mitigate integration risks.
- Support integration, system testing, and operational-readiness activities.
- Embed security by design, translating defense and government security requirements into identity, access control, auditing, logging, monitoring, application, and interface controls.
- Define resilience, availability, recovery, redundancy, and continuity requirements.
- Support security assessments, design reviews, accreditation, and remediation; safeguard sensitive information.
- Architect cloud, on-premises, edge, and hybrid deployments, including containers, Kubernetes, configuration management, CI/CD, observability, backup, disaster recovery, and high availability.
- Work with DevOps, IT, Network Operations, and support teams on deployability, supportability, and maintainability.
- Specify production monitoring, troubleshooting, and diagnostics; support capacity and performance planning, release planning, and readiness reviews.
- Support CONOPS, requirements analysis, architecture documentation, technical baselines, and program planning.
- Participate in PI planning, milestones, CDRs, reviews, and working groups.
- Provide architecture input to scope, estimates, sequencing, staffing, and commitments; communicate decisions, risks, and status to leadership.
- Mentor technical leads and developers across design, integration, verification, and deployment; promote architectural consistency and reuse.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
- 10+ years in software or systems engineering, including significant software or solution architecture experience.
- Proven architecture experience with large, distributed, mission-critical operational systems.
- Deep knowledge of microservices, APIs, event-driven architecture, messaging, data integration, and distributed systems.
- Hands-on architectural experience with cloud-native applications, containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, infrastructure automation, and observability.
- Experience defining highly available, resilient, secure, and supportable production architectures.
- Ability to translate operational requirements into implementable architectures and support reviews, integration, verification, deployment, and readiness.
- Strong documentation, stakeholder communication, presentation, and cross-team technical leadership skills.
- Satellite communications, telecommunications, defense, government, or comparable mission-critical experience.
- Knowledge of military Ka-band and satellite network operations.
- Experience with OSS/BSS, network management, orchestration, provisioning, assurance, and operational data platforms.
- Familiarity with REST/OpenAPI, NETCONF/YANG, message brokers, telemetry, and modern integration patterns.
- Experience with government/military security requirements and formal accreditation.
- Experience with distributed teams and external delivery partners.
- Familiarity with requirements traceability, CONOPS, CDR, and system-level verification.
