About the Role

Nelson Education is seeking a Corporate Accountant to join the Accounting team, reporting to the Manager, Accounting. The Corporate Accountant plays a key role in the monthly financial close, with responsibility for preparing and maintaining account reconciliations, journal entries, supporting schedules and analysis across the balance sheet.

The role is accountable for the accuracy and completeness of the accounts it owns and is expected to understand and explain the activity behind those balances. The Corporate Accountant also supports the external audit, contributes to process documentation and improvement, and works closely with colleagues across Finance and the business to ensure accounting information is complete and reliable.

This is an opportunity for an accountant with hands-on month-end experience to take ownership of increasingly complex areas, build deeper IFRS and systems expertise, and grow toward broader financial reporting responsibility with direct coaching from the Manager, Accounting.

Key Accountabilities

Month-End Close & Account Reconciliations

  • Own assigned areas of the monthly close, including account reconciliations, journal entries, supporting schedules and balance sheet roll forwards, ensuring balances are accurate, supported and fully explained.
  • Prepare and maintain accounting schedules and entries for areas such as accruals, fixed assets, intangible assets, royalties and other assigned accounts.
  • Prepare royalty calculations, author and licensor statements, accruals and payment schedules in accordance with contract terms, and prepare the annual tax reporting for royalty recipients, including T4A and related slips.
  • Prepare or support GST/HST and other indirect tax filings and reconciliations for assigned accounts.
  • Investigate and resolve reconciling items, unusual movements and accounting issues, partnering with the Manager, Accounting on matters requiring judgment or review before entries are posted.
  • Manage assigned close activities in accordance with the close calendar, proactively identifying and escalating issues that could affect deadlines or financial reporting.
  • Prepare analysis and variance explanations for accounts owned and contribute to the monthly financial reporting process.

Analysis & Reporting Support

  • Prepare supporting schedules and respond to audit requests for assigned accounts, ensuring information is complete, accurate and provided on a timely basis.
  • Support the preparation of annual financial statement disclosures and other financial reporting requirements.
  • Support financial analysis and reporting activities, including gross margin and SG&A analysis, through data extraction, reconciliation and analysis.

Process Ownership & Improvement

  • Own and maintain documented procedures for assigned accounting areas, ensuring processes are current, well controlled and can be consistently performed by others.
  • Identify and implement improvements to the efficiency, accuracy and consistency of reconciliation and close processes through better documentation, templates, system capabilities and automation.
  • Build strong working knowledge of NetSuite, including reporting, saved searches, journal posting and period-close activities, and use system capabilities to improve the processes owned.
  • Develop broader knowledge of the Accounting function and progressively take ownership of more complex accounting areas.

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Partner with the Manager, Accounting on the close calendar and review findings, and proactively communicate issues and recommendations.
  • Partner with the Manager, Reporting on NetSuite reporting, data extracts and automation of recurring entries, and with AR & AP Operations, Supply Chain and other functions to ensure the completeness and accuracy of information supporting assigned accounts.
  • Provide backup and support for other areas of the close and share knowledge as responsibilities expand.
  • Contribute to a collaborative Finance team and take on additional projects and responsibilities as business needs evolve.
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline; CPA designation or active enrolment in the CPA program strongly preferred.
  • 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on month-end close and account reconciliation responsibilities.
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles, with working knowledge of IFRS; familiarity with GST/HST is an asset.
  • Experience with balance sheet accounting, including areas such as accruals, fixed assets and other reconciliations; exposure to royalty or other contract-based calculations is an asset.
  • Experience supporting an external audit.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with NetSuite or another ERP system.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple deliverables and deadlines independently.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative, curious and continuous-improvement mindset.

Who You Are

You are a detail-oriented accountant who takes ownership of the accounts you manage and is committed to getting the numbers right. You understand the accounting behind the entries you prepare, can investigate and explain movements in your accounts, and are comfortable working to deadlines during the month-end close.

You are curious and eager to learn, with an interest in taking on increasingly complex accounting and reporting responsibilities. You are organized, reliable and collaborative, and you look for ways to improve the processes you own rather than simply following them.

Compensation

The base salary range for this permanent full-time position starts at $70,000 per annum based on experience. This position may also be eligible for performance-related incentive pay. Compensation is part of our broader Total Rewards package, which includes benefits and programs that support employee well-being and growth.
