JOB TITLE: Commissioning Operator in the Power Block Unit
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Commissioning Coordinator for the Power Block, the Commissioning Operator (Power) will support the initial startup, testing, and stabilization of the Baker Hughes Gas Turbines (model LT16 x 3) and the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) STG.
Scope includes ensuring all equipment is safely energized, tested, and brought to full production capacity in compliance with Air Products safety standards.
The position requires working with Vendors and subcontractors and significant “hands-on” field activities; troubleshooting equipment, verifying system performance against design specifications, and training Operations personnel.
EXPECTATIONS:
First 3-months:
·Get up to speed as quickly as possible; work with your Commissioning Coordinator to understand the Commissioning and startup plans for the Power Block area. This includes reviewing the System Commissioning Packages and procedures.
·Complete the CSU Operator Training Material and Competency Validation for the Power Block Unit.
·Complete the Safety Work Permit (SWP) training. While this training is extensive, the principles are aligned with other Alberta industrial sites.
Field Work:
·Support Construction Complete (CC) walkdowns.
·Support Mechanically Complete (MC) walkdowns.
·Install energy isolations, issue SWPs as required.
·Follow directions from the Power CSU Coordinator and provide daily progress reports.
·Under the direction of your CSU Coordinator, work with vendors and Engineering to execute the
Commissioning and Startup procedures that include but not limited to:
o Overseeing chemical cleaning and flushing of critical auxiliary units like lube oil and seal oil.
o Supporting the electrical testing of excitation systems, static frequency converters, and generator protection relays.
o Perform initial cold/hot commissioning, functional testing, and trial runs of the GTGs
o Commissioning of the STG condenser and cooling water systems
o Support STG steam line blowing
o Supporting STG initial roll & heat up. Overspeed testing, synchronization, load progression
o STG Reliability testing
·Redline Operations Site Work Instruction Manuals (SWIMs, also known as Operating Procedures).
·Share CSU experience, opinions, and knowledge. Teach and mentor less experienced members of the team.
·Support the training of Operations personnel.
Other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE:
Certifications: Power Engineer (min 4th Class)
Experience: Minimum 5 years of hands-on operator experience with Gas Turbine Generators (GTGs) and/or Steam Turbine Generators. Experience in the commissioning & startup of this equipment is highly preferred.
Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of GTG and/or STG operation required.
