Hybrid Working
We work on a hybrid basis, splitting time between our Toronto office on University Avenue, our homes and client sites, depending on business needs.
About the role
Due to continued growth, we are hiring a rail operations and maintenance professional to join our team in Canada on a permanent full-time basis as a Managing Consultant – Operations & Maintenance.
As a hands-on consultant, you will play a key role in the delivery of high-quality advice and solutions across complex rail projects and advisory commissions in Canada.
In this role, you will split your time between our Toronto office and your home. From time to time, you may also be required to work at client sites or travel further afield to other provinces to support business needs. Any travel requirements would be discussed with you in advance.
This is an exciting opportunity to join NRC and play a key role in delivering complex rail projects and advisory services in Canada. You will work closely with clients and colleagues to provide practical expertise, solve complex challenges and help deliver high-quality outcomes across a range of programmes.
You will also work alongside experienced rail professionals from around the world, including Network Rail colleagues on secondment from the UK, gaining insight from one of the world’s most established railway systems across major projects.
Key Accountabilities
In this role, you can expect to be doing the following:
- Build trusted relationships with clients, operators, maintainers, delivery partners and technical teams, providing practical advice informed by experience of a live passenger railway.
- Connect operations, service planning and passenger needs with infrastructure, asset, design and maintenance decisions.
- Develop and review maintenance strategies, asset management arrangements, resource plans and performance measures that support safe, reliable and efficient service.
- Assess designs and technical proposals for operability, maintainability, reliability, accessibility, whole-life performance and their impact on passenger service.
- Bring an operator and maintainer perspective to project teams, constructively challenging assumptions and identifying operational and maintenance risks early.
- Lead Operations & Maintenance input across systems integration, testing, commissioning, trial operations, operational readiness and transition into passenger service.
- Use asset, maintenance and failure information to identify practical improvements to reliability, availability and service performance.
- Lead consultancy proposals and assignments, managing scope, deliverables, resources, programme, costs and risks while supporting multidisciplinary teams and identifying further client needs.
Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in this role, you will typically demonstrate the following:
- A relevant degree or professional qualification, or equivalent practical expertise gained in railway operations, maintenance, engineering or asset management.
- Substantial maintenance experience within an operating passenger railway, metro or light rail organisation; relevant urban heavy rail experience is also welcomed.
- Broad knowledge of railway infrastructure, systems and maintenance, with the ability to work across disciplines rather than within a single asset specialism.
- Genuine experience of an operational transit environment, including close collaboration with operations teams and an understanding of how service planning and passenger needs influence maintenance and infrastructure decisions.
- A strong understanding of operability, maintainability, reliability, availability, asset performance and whole-life considerations.
- Experience supporting design reviews, project delivery, testing, commissioning, operational readiness or the transition into passenger service.
- Strong consultancy, stakeholder and communication skills, with the confidence to lead assignments, challenge constructively and explain complex matters clearly.
- Canadian rail or transit experience, particularly within Ontario or a Metrolinx environment, would be advantageous, as would experience spanning infrastructure, rolling stock, systems, stations, facilities and maintenance delivery interfaces.
