Hybrid Working

We work on a hybrid basis, splitting time between our Toronto office on University Avenue, our homes and client sites, depending on business needs.

About the role

Due to continued growth, we are hiring a rail systems assurance professional to join our team in Canada on a permanent full-time basis as a Managing Consultant – Systems Assurance.

As a hands-on consultant, you will play a key role in the delivery of high-quality advice and solutions across complex rail projects and advisory commissions in Canada.

In this role, you will travel to Edmonton for several days each month to work on-site with our client. For the rest of your time, you will split your time between our Toronto office and your home.

This is an exciting opportunity to join NRC and play a key role in delivering complex rail projects and advisory services in Canada. You will work closely with clients and colleagues to provide practical expertise, solve complex challenges and help deliver high-quality outcomes across a range of programmes.

You will also work alongside experienced rail professionals from around the world, including Network Rail colleagues on secondment from the UK, gaining insight from one of the world’s most established railway systems across major projects.

Key Accountabilities

In this role, you can expect to be doing the following:

  • Build trusted relationships with clients, delivery partners, operators, maintainers and assurance stakeholders, translating complex issues into clear decisions and actions.
  • Develop proportionate systems assurance strategies, plans and governance arrangements that support delivery across the full programme lifecycle.
  • Lead requirements management and traceability, ensuring operational, safety, stakeholder and technical requirements are clearly defined, controlled and verified.
  • Plan and oversee verification and validation activities, making sure robust evidence is available to support compliance, acceptance and authorization for service.
  • Lead safety assurance activities, including hazard identification, risk assessment, hazard management and the review of safety requirements and evidence.
  • Coordinate assurance across railway systems, infrastructure, rolling stock, signalling, communications, power, stations, operations and maintenance interfaces.
  • Provide assurance input to design reviews, change control, testing, commissioning, operational readiness and transition into passenger service, identifying and closing evidence gaps.
  • Lead consultancy proposals and assignments, defining scope, deliverables, resources, programme, costs and risks while delivering to agreed quality, timescales and budget.

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will typically demonstrate the following:

  • A relevant degree, professional qualification or equivalent practical expertise in systems engineering, railway engineering, safety engineering or a related discipline.
  • Substantial systems assurance experience gained on complex, safety-critical rail, metro or light rail programmes.
  • Strong practical knowledge of systems engineering and assurance, including requirements management, verification and validation, systems integration, interfaces and change control.
  • Demonstrable safety assurance experience covering hazard identification, risk assessment, hazard tracking, safety requirements and the preparation or review of safety evidence.
  • Experience developing assurance strategies, plans and evidence-based acceptance arrangements, with the ability to work confidently across multiple railway disciplines and interfaces.
  • Experience supporting design reviews, testing, commissioning, operational readiness and entry into service on major programmes.
  • Strong consultancy, stakeholder and communication skills, with the confidence to challenge constructively and explain complex assurance matters clearly to different audiences.
  • Experience leading assignments and producing clear assurance plans, reports and recommendations; Canadian transit experience, recognised systems assurance standards, relevant tools or professional registration would be advantageous.
