Rainy River
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River mine is an open pit and underground, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
The Rainy River mine, located adjacent to the Ontario/Minnesota border is 65 kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. Position Reports To: Construction Technical Supervisor
Position Overview
Reporting to the Construction Technical Supervisor, the Construction Surveyor provides technical survey support to the Coeur Rainy River Construction team, including construction layout, as-built verification, quantity and volume calculations, UAV surveying, and survey data management. The role works closely with construction, engineering, and contractors to support safe and accurate execution of construction activities in accordance with approved engineering drawings, specifications, and site standards.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with applicable mining regulations and follow Coeur Rainy River safety, environmental, and quality standards in all aspects of work.
- Complete field-level risk assessments and Critical Control Verifications (CCVs) as required, identifying and managing hazards associated with survey activities and work within active construction areas.
- Complete construction survey layout for earthworks, roads, dams and embankments, slopes, drainage, pipelines, utilities, excavations, structures, and other civil construction activities.
- Complete construction as-built and verification surveys to confirm work is being completed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, and design requirements.
- Establish, maintain, and verify survey control to support construction activities.
- Perform quantity calculations, earthwork volumes, stockpile measurements, surface comparisons, and material take-offs to support construction progress tracking and contractor quantity verification.
- Work collaboratively with the Construction Coordinator to plan upcoming construction activities, incorporate field information into construction plans, and maintain alignment between field execution and office planning.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and design information and prepare survey layout and field data using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Create and maintain AutoCAD Civil 3D survey deliverables including points, surfaces, alignments, profiles, feature lines, and other construction data as required.
- Operate RTK GNSS/GPS and total station equipment, including equipment setup, field checks, troubleshooting, and verification of survey results.
- Plan and conduct UAV survey missions and process, review, and quality-check aerial survey data, while maintaining required Transport Canada licensing and regulatory compliance.
- Process and manage UAV photogrammetry and LiDAR survey data for use in construction, engineering, volume calculations, and progress monitoring.
- Prepare and provide survey data for construction equipment and machine-control systems as required.
- Complete instrumentation and monitoring surveys, including settlement plates, monitoring points/pins, inclinometers, and other monitoring systems as required.
- Provide survey support for boreholes, drilling, test pits, investigations, utility locates, and other construction or engineering activities.
- Identify and communicate discrepancies between field conditions and engineering drawings or design information to the appropriate Construction or Engineering personnel.
- Coordinate survey requirements and priorities with the Construction team, Engineering, Capital Projects, contractors, and other departments as required.
- Maintain organized survey records, field data, as-built information, UAV data, and other digital survey deliverables in accordance with department standards.
- Provide clear and detailed cross-shift communication to ensure continuity of active construction and survey activities.
- Support the development and continuous improvement of survey procedures, workflows, standards, and data-management practices.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of direct construction surveying experience in heavy civil, mining, earthworks, or a similar construction environment.
- Demonstrated ability to independently perform construction survey work with minimal supervision, including planning survey tasks, completing field layout and verification, processing survey data, and producing final deliverables.
- Proficient in the setup, operation, troubleshooting, and verification of RTK GNSS/GPS and Total Station survey equipment, including establishing and working from survey control.
- Proficient working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, including working with points, surfaces, alignments, profiles, feature lines, and earthwork/volume calculations.
- Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, plans, and construction details and translate design information into accurate field layout.
- Demonstrated experience completing construction as-builts, quantity and volume calculations, stockpile measurements, surface comparisons, and survey verification.
- Experience planning and conducting UAV/drone surveys and working with aerial survey data.
- Must hold a valid Transport Canada Pilot Certificate – Basic operations or be capable of obtaining the required certification within the first three months of employment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently troubleshoot field, equipment, survey-data, and design-related issues.
- Strong organizational and data-management skills with the ability to maintain accurate, traceable survey records and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with Construction Coordinators, Engineering, contractors, operators, supervisors, and other site personnel.
- Ability to adapt to changing construction priorities and effectively manage multiple tasks while maintaining survey accuracy and quality.
- Valid driver's licence and ability to safely operate light vehicles within active mining and construction areas.
- Experience with Leica survey equipment and Leica Captivate, PIX4D, UAV photogrammetry, LiDAR processing, GIS, and/or machine-control workflows is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated experience independently completing a construction survey workflow from design review and field layout through as-built verification and final survey deliverables.
Working Conditions
- Work is split between office and field environments, with field requirements varying based on construction activities and project priorities.
- Regular work outdoors in an active mine and heavy civil construction environment, including exposure to changing weather conditions, dust, noise, and seasonal temperature extremes.
- Regular driving on mine roads, haul roads, and within active construction areas with interaction around heavy equipment and construction traffic.
- Frequent walking and working on uneven, sloped, soft, rocky, or otherwise challenging terrain, including active earthworks and remote areas of site in all weather conditions.
- Frequent transportation, setup, and use of survey equipment including GNSS/GPS equipment, Total Stations, tripods, UAV equipment, batteries, and associated field gear.
- Ability to safely lift and carry survey equipment and field gear, typically weighing up to 20 kg (44 lb).
- Field work may require extended periods of standing, walking, bending, and working from established survey positions.
- Regular use of computers and technical software for survey processing, CAD, UAV data processing, quantity calculations, and preparation of survey deliverables.
- Work requires regular coordination and communication with Construction, Engineering, Capital Projects, contractors, equipment operators, and other site personnel.
- Must be comfortable working independently in the field while maintaining communication with the broader Construction team.
- Work priorities and field requirements may change throughout the shift in response to construction progress, field conditions, and operational requirements.
The anticipated salary for this position will be between $ 85,000 to 95,000.
