Original job description
New Value Solutions, a national IT consulting company, is seeking a part-time Quality Assurance Analyst to establish and maintain a formal QA function for Power BI reports, dashboards, data models, and related analytics products. The successful candidate will develop QA standards, testing practices, and release controls to support accurate, reliable reporting for business operations, compliance, resource planning, and performance management.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute test strategies, test plans, test cases, regression test suites, and release checklists for Power BI solutions.
- Perform functional, regression, and end-to-end testing across reports, dashboards, and data models.
- Validate source-to-report accuracy across SQL Server, ETL pipelines, semantic models, and Power BI reports.
- Establish and maintain QA standards, templates, testing methodologies, quality gates, and release governance processes.
- Identify, document, prioritize, and track defects using Azure DevOps or equivalent tools; collaborate with developers to resolve issues.
- Validate fixes and support release sign-off before production deployment.
- Assess the impact of data model changes on dependent reports and dashboards, including data integrity and consistency across shared models.
- Review business requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, and reporting specifications for completeness, clarity, testability, and alignment with business rules and reporting needs.
- Develop reusable test assets and data validation scripts, and identify opportunities for test automation and improved testing efficiency.
- Communicate quality findings, risks, and recommendations to technical teams and business stakeholders.
Requirements:
- Experience performing quality assurance testing for Power BI reports, dashboards, semantic models, and related analytics products.
- Strong understanding of data validation and testing methodologies, including functional, regression, and end-to-end testing.
- Strong SQL and data querying skills, with experience validating data across SQL Server, ETL pipelines, semantic models, and reports.
- Knowledge of data modelling concepts, including relationships, measures, star schemas, and snowflake schemas.
- Understanding of DAX for validating measures and calculations.
- Experience with data profiling and data quality assessment, including identifying inconsistencies, anomalies, and downstream impacts of data changes.
- Experience using test management and defect tracking tools such as Azure DevOps or Jira.
- Strong analytical, root cause analysis, risk assessment, and communication skills, with a structured approach and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to translate stakeholder requirements into measurable QA criteria and explain quality findings in non-technical language.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with business and technical teams, work with minimal supervision, and maintain confidentiality.
- Power Query (M) and Microsoft Fabric experience preferred.
If you have the necessary expertise and are able to work in Canada, please submit your resume. While we thank all candidates in advance for their application, only those shortlisted will be contacted.
