Original job description
Newmont produces metals the world needs - safely, responsibly and with care for people, communities and the environment. With a 100+ year history, we continue to shape the future of mining through innovation and strong operational performance. By joining our inclusive, world-class team, you can help shape the future of mining and make a meaningful difference.
Red Chris is an open-pit copper-gold mine in the famous Golden Triangle of northern British Columbia, situated on the traditional territory of the Tahltan Nation. As a fly-in, fly-out operation, Red Chris is reached via charter flights from multiple locations in BC and Alberta, with teams working on a rotational schedule. Currently an active open-pit producer, Red Chris is poised for an exciting transformation – we are developing a high-value underground block cave that will extend the mine’s life for decades and unlock even more resources. The remote location fosters a close-knit “camp” community where safety and teamwork come first. Working at Red Chris offers an adventurous career at the frontier of mining innovation, with the opportunity to shape a major expansion while enjoying the natural beauty of northern Canada. Our team values strong partnerships with local First Nations and is committed to operating in a safe, inclusive and environmentally responsible way.
About The Project
Red Chris is a gold and copper mine located in Tahltan Territory in northern British Columbia. Operated by Newmont since 2023, the mine is transitioning from open pit to underground block caving, creating technically advanced opportunities to work alongside global experts. Newmont is committed to partnering with the Tahltan Nation and local communities to deliver long-term social, environmental and economic benefits.
Your Impact
As an Engineer, Mid-Range Planning, you'll develop and maintain integrated mid-range plans that connect short-term activities with longer-term project objectives for the Red Chris Block Cave Project.
You'll work closely with stakeholders to develop an integrated three-month rolling plan for underground activities, incorporating planning parameters and identifying opportunities to optimize the plan as the project evolves.
As Part of Our Team, You Will
- Develop and deliver the integrated three-month rolling plan for all underground activities, aligning short-term planning parameters with longer-term project objectives.
- Work with stakeholders to gather and incorporate planning parameters, constraints and operational requirements into mine plans and schedules.
- Use Deswik.Sched and Deswik.CAD to develop, maintain and optimize underground mine plans and schedules.
- Collaborate closely with the short-term planning team to integrate short-term parameters with longer-term planning goals.
- Analyze planning information, identify risks and opportunities, and continuously seek improvements as project activities and priorities evolve.
- Integrate underground development, mass excavation, raiseboring, infrastructure and other project activities into the schedule as the project progresses.
- Adapt plans and schedules as the project grows, incorporating additional teams, activities and stakeholder requirements.
- Engineering degree in a relevant discipline, with registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia or eligibility to obtain registration.
- Experience in mining or heavy industry, ideally within an underground mine project or remote mine-site environment; previous caving experience is an asset.
- Proficiency in Deswik.Sched and Deswik.CAD; experience with VentSim is an asset.
- Experience developing and integrating mine plans and schedules, with the ability to gather stakeholder input and translate planning parameters into practical, coordinated plans.
- Ability to adapt to a remote mine-site environment, including camp life and extreme weather conditions.
This is a permanent opportunity at the Red Chris Block Cave mine site, working a 15 days on / 13 days off rotation with 12-hour workdays. The role is primarily office-based at site with underground exposure. Travel to and from the Red Chris mine site is arranged from designated marshal points in Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary and Smithers. Employees are responsible for travel to and from their designated marshal point. A travel allowance is provided based on location of hire and is separate from company-paid commercial or charter flights.
