Original job description

NIKA LAW LLP is a specialized firm that provides both solicitor-side and litigation estate services, giving clients comprehensive support in wills, trusts, and estates matters. The firm’s planning approach is highly collaborative, working closely with clients’ financial, wealth management, and tax professionals to build cohesive strategies. Because the team also litigates wills and estates, they are able to anticipate and mitigate potential issues before they arise. As litigators, they act as strong advocates and negotiators in and out of the courtroom, while maintaining sensitivity to the emotional nature of estate disputes. NIKA LAW LLP focuses on ensuring clients feel heard, protected, and properly advised as they navigate complex legal and family dynamics.

Role Description:

The full-time Associate Lawyer role is an on-site position based in Toronto. The associate will draft and review wills, powers of attorney, and trust documents, and advise clients on estate planning strategies in collaboration with their financial and tax advisors.

In addition, the associate will assist with estate, power of attorney and capacity litigation files, examine evidence, draft pleadings and attend court / mediations under the supervision of senior lawyers.

Qualifications

  • Licensed lawyer in good standing with the applicable Canadian provincial law society, with minimum of 1 year experience in wills, trusts, and estates law.
  • Knowledge of estate planning, estate administration, and trusts, including drafting wills, powers of attorney, and related planning documents.
  • Experience or familiarity with estate litigation, including contested wills, trust disputes, and capacity or undue influence claims.
  • Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills, with the ability to prepare clear opinions, memoranda, and court materials.
  • Effective client communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle sensitive and emotional matters with professionalism and empathy.
  • Solid negotiation and advocacy skills, with comfort appearing in court and in alternate dispute resolution settings where required.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities, including managing multiple files, meeting deadlines, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal team members and external professionals such as financial advisors and tax specialists.
  • Interest in continuous learning in estates, trusts, tax, and related areas; prior experience in a boutique or specialized firm is an asset.
  • Commitment to ethical practice, client-centered service, and maintaining confidentiality and professional standards.
