Original job description
We are looking for a hands-on mechanical engineer who wants to see their designs move from concept to production and make a real impact across manufacturing operations in Canada, the United States, and Mexico! This is a great opportunity to learn and grow with a world class manufacturer.
About the job
We are looking for a practical, detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer to support the design and development of transformer and reactor product lines for Noratel Canada and Noratel US.
Based in Mississauga, Ontario, you will take ownership of the mechanical design and documentation lifecycle - from reviewing customer requirements and assessing technical feasibility through CAD design, simulation, BOM creation, sourcing, and production release.
This is a role for an engineer who enjoys combining technical design work with close collaboration across manufacturing, suppliers, and international teams. You will play an important part in ensuring that our products are accurate, manufacturable, cost-effective, and fully supported by high-quality technical documentation.
Noratel is a global manufacturer of custom power magnetics, serving demanding industry segments since 1925. As part of the Magnetics Division within discoverIE Group, we benefit from a global network of specialized electronic component manufacturers. With more than 2,000 employees across 13 countries,
Noratel combines local responsiveness with global engineering and production capabilities to deliver world-class magnetic components.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design and Simulation
- Design and revise mechanical parts and assemblies using 3D CAD software, including Autodesk Inventor
- Produce accurate 2D manufacturing drawings for parts and assemblies
- Perform FEM, structural, and thermal simulations to validate design performance
- Review customer specifications, drawings, and technical requirements to assess feasibility
- Develop practical, cost-effective, and manufacturable design solutions
Documentation and Engineering Change Management
- Prepare equipment manuals, repair instructions, manufacturing procedures, test procedures, and technical reports
- Create, review, approve, and implement engineering changes
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date drawings, specifications, and design records
- Ensure documentation complies with applicable quality management and regulatory requirements
BOM and ERP Management
- Create and maintain bills of materials and manufacturing routers within an ERP system, such as Sage500
- Enter and update component, material, routing, and part information
- Ensure technical and manufacturing data remains complete, accurate, and aligned across systems
Sourcing and Supplier Collaboration
- Source components and raw materials for new product development, cost-reduction projects, and regulatory compliance
- Request and review quotations from vendors and fabricators
- Work closely with suppliers to optimize designs for cost, quality, availability, and manufacturability
Manufacturing Support and Continuous Improvement
- Provide technical support to production teams and partner facilities across Canada, the United States and Mexico
- Support troubleshooting, design clarification, and resolution of manufacturing issues
- Identify and implement improvements across design, documentation, sourcing and production processes
- Collaborate with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and other cross-functional teams
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline
- Mechanical design experience within a manufacturing environment will be an added advantage
- Proficiency in 3D CAD design and 2D technical drafting; Autodesk Inventor experience is preferred
- Experience with FEM, structural, or thermal simulation
- Understanding of design for manufacturing and assembly
- Working knowledge of international safety and product standards, including IEC, UL, and CSA will be added advantage
- Technical writing and documentation skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a deadline-driven environment
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across functions, cultures, and locations
- Spanish language skills are considered an asset
Key Competencies
- Hands-on and solutions-oriented engineering approach
