Original job description

We Are a Hard-Tech Company

Norcada is a photonics, MEMS, and nanotechnology solutions company located in Edmonton, Canada. Since our founding in 2002, we have developed a broad customer base in academia and industry and have sales and product development collaborations worldwide. Our product solutions enable work in environmental sensing, microscopy and microanalysis, proteomics and genomics, and building the next generation of quantum devices. They’re currently used in all seven continents and even in space!

The Position

Norcada makes cutting-edge scientific products and instruments, and we need people with a scientific or technical background and a passion for the field to work directly with our customers. Our technical sales team helps turn customers’ challenging or groundbreaking ideas into reality. We are hiring up to three Technical Solutions Leads, each focused on one of these areas: photonics systems and optical packaging; operando microanalysis; and customized device and assembly solutions.*

This isn’t your traditional sales role; we don’t cold-call or spend all day on the phone. Our team spends its time talking with customers to understand their requirements and liaising with our product teams to design and create optimal solutions. These solutions come in many forms (holders, laser systems, quantum devices, MEMS chips, and more), and many of our projects focus on tailored, one-of-a-kind solutions that push the boundaries of science.

We’re approaching our 25th year in business, and many of our customers come back to collaborate on their next project. Most of our proactive outreach happens at conferences around the world, along with the great work of our marketing team!

Our next Technical Solutions Lead will handle customer inquiries, work with customers to configure technical solutions and product options, develop quotations and proposals, support marketing activities, coordinate projects, and provide full-cycle customer support.

  • In your application cover letter, let us know which area best matches your experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage with customers across global markets as their main technical point of contact, through email, online channels, calls, and meetings, from first inquiry through delivery and beyond.
  • Scope new projects by digging into each customer’s requirements, then work with our technical teams to assess feasibility, weigh design options and trade-offs, and design, build, and engineer precise custom solutions.
  • Prepare technical proposals and quotations for bespoke product solutions, covering specifications, components, pricing, and lead times.
  • Build and manage bespoke, technically challenging projects end to end, coordinating the people involved and keeping the customer, engineering, and production teams aligned on scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Support client management and long-term relationships, including coordinating fulfilment and after-sales support.
  • Use our CRM to manage customer information and track leads.
  • Support international conferences, exhibitions, trade shows, and webinars, along with other marketing activities.
  • Uphold our world-renowned standard of delivery excellence, with the professionalism and confidentiality expected in a high-tech company.

Qualifications And Experience

  • Strong technical background in photonics, nanotechnology, MEMS, electron or X-ray microscopy and spectroscopy, optoelectronics packaging, or a related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented and organized
  • Legally able to work in Canada
  • Based in, or willing to relocate to, the Greater Edmonton Area
  • Excited and able to travel to conferences, trade shows, and customer sites (2–3 times per year)
  • Able to collaborate with fabrication, engineering, and non-technical teams
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace

Ideal Candidate Skills/Assets

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field
  • Experience in sales, product management, customer service in engineering, manufacturing, microscopy and microanalysis, semiconductors, optics, photonics, sensor technology, or MEMS/semiconductor industries
  • Experience developing, building, selling, or supporting microanalysis or photonics/optics solutions, especially in-situ analysis for X-ray or electron microscopy and/or spectroscopy
  • Experience developing technical and sales proposals and project plans
  • Experience with CAD software, such as layout tools (L-Edit, KLayout), mechanical CAD (Creo/Pro-E, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor), or PCB design tools (Eagle, KiCad, Altium)
  • Experience with CRMs such as Salesforce or HubSpot
  • Training or experience in process or project management
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with customers and partners in various countries

Schedule

  • Full Time Monday to Friday work (with occasional weekend/evening availability for international customers/travel)

Benefits

  • Health & Dental - premiums partially covered by us
  • Time to Recharge - 15 vacation days + 11 paid holidays annually
  • Personal Learning Budget - provided to you to spend on skills, courses, or conferences
  • 5% Pension Contribution - we contribute, no matching required on your end
  • Monthly Team Events - meals & activities for our team

Please note that applications without a personally written cover letter will not be considered for this position. Thank you!
