About Nord Quantique

At Nord Quantique, we strive to build impactful technology by relentlessly pushing our understanding of quantum science. We are an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, innovators, builders, and enthusiasts on a mission to make quantum computing a reality. Our quantum processors are designed to reduce errors in quantum computation to facilitate long-term scaling toward fully-fledged quantum computers. We believe it is our responsibility to deliver this transformative technology for the greater good of society.

Located at the heart of the beautiful Eastern Townships region in the province of Quebec, Canada, we develop our technology in the vibrant quantum ecosystem of Sherbrooke. Leaning on more than a decade of vertical integration of quantum hardware, we are leveraging a comprehensive pool of quantum technology and micro-electronic infrastructure to deploy our quantum computing technology.

Our current needs

As we scale up our quantum processors and supporting infrastructure, we are seeking a skilled and self-driven Mechanical Designer to join our Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Team. This role focuses on precision mechanical design and mechanical/thermal analysis of cryogenic quantum hardware, including dilution refrigerator setups, QPU assemblies, and 3D resonator cavities.

The ideal candidate has experience designing precision hardware for demanding environments such as cryogenics, scientific instrumentation, semiconductor equipment, optics/photonics, aerospace and space systems, or other high-precision engineering applications. Direct quantum experience is an asset, but not required.

This is a dynamic role within a fast-paced, research-driven environment, offering the opportunity to contribute directly to the advancement of scalable quantum hardware.

Working closely with the mechanical design team, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

Design precision mechanical assemblies and miniature structural components for the Quantum Processing Units (QPU) operating at cryogenic temperatures ~20mK range, including thermal analysis for differential CTE behavior and thermalization.
Develop precision mechanical solutions using flexures, kinematic mounts, deterministic constraints, and repeatable alignment methods including consideration of thermal contraction, differential CTE and tolerance accumulation.
Perform structural and thermo-mechanical analysis of the assemblies using FEA to validate the load capacity, thermal performance, stress distribution, and deformation in the system.
Design the cryogenic setup for dilution refrigerators that host the QPUs, including supports, mechanical interfaces, thermal anchoring, and alignment features.
Optimize designs for manufacturability, assembly repeatability, scalability, and long-term system reliability.
Design for assembly by developing standardized and repeatable assembly procedures for the QPU and dilution refrigerators.
Maintain CAD libraries, technical drawings and documentation, revision control, and manufacturing records to support scalable hardware development.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Design Team and Quantum Characterization Team to iterate on the mechanical designs of the system.
Coordinate with external suppliers to support fabrication, sourcing, and integration of the designs.

Education and experience requirements:

Bachelor’s degree (BSc) or Master’s degree (MSc) in Mechanical Engineering or in related field with minimum 5 years of mechanical design experience.
Must have R&D industry experience, preferably within quantum hardware, scientific instrumentation, cryogenic system, aerospace/space systems, semiconductor equipment or other precision engineering industries, with a proven track record of working with interdisciplinary teams.

Sought expertise and knowledge:

Experience designing precision mechanical hardware and tightly toleranced assemblies.
Experience with designing with differential CTE behaviour effects and dimensional stability of mechanical assemblies in cryogenic temperatures.
Experience with stress and thermal analysis using Finite Element Method in Ansys or equivalent software.
Understanding of manufacturability, assembly repeatability, and long-term hardware reliability.
Experience creating CAD designs and GD&T drawings, engineering drawings, and assembly documentation using SolidWorks, Onshape, or similar CAD software.
Ability to work effectively in fast-paced interdisciplinary R&D environments and deliver results within tight deadlines.
Advanced English proficiency is required. French is an asset.

Sought profile:

Great sense of autonomy and dependability
Proficient in producing clear and concise technical reports
Excellent organizational and prioritization skills focused on achieving company objectives
Willingness to learn and explore new concepts
Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams, external vendors, suppliers, and development partners
Team-oriented mindset with a focus on cooperation and knowledge sharing within the team.

Nord Quantique is committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in its training, workplaces, and activities. We encourage applications from diverse backgrounds and traditionally marginalized groups.

Working at Nord Quantique

At Nord Quantique, you will be part of something special: working in a highly dynamic environment at the forefront of quantum technology development while benefiting from a vibrant ecosystem located at the heart of the Quantum Innovation Zone of the picturesque city of Sherbrooke. Our interdisciplinary team is laser-focused on solving grand challenges and making quantum computing a reality.

Nord Quantique is an equal-opportunity employer, and we are committed to building a diverse and inclusive work environment where all individuals can fulfill their aspirations while being supported and heard. This also means that we offer flexible work schedules and adapt our methods for the well-being of every individual.

Moving to Nord Quantique

Nord Quantique offers extensive moving support, including help with immigration paperwork, with finding a place to live, with access to childcare and schools, even helping your partner to find a new job. We offer a relocation compensation package and competitive salaries.

Salary: $110,000 – $127,000

Vacation: 5 weeks per year

Benefits: Group insurance (including dental care), virtual care, lifestyle spending account (all available after 3 months of service)

Working language: English and/or French.

Workplace: Espace Quantique 1, 1950 rue Roy, Sherbrooke, QC, J1K 1B7.
