OVERVIEW

Community Support Workers at NPDWC are the first point of contact between community members and the organization. They work in our daytime drop-in space providing support with meeting basic needs, resources and referrals, and any other needs that may arise. They also connect community members to more in-depth supports within the organization, including Outreach and Community Navigators. In addition, they perform reception/administrative duties, cleaning and sanitization, and other projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Commitment to the mission, vision, and guiding principles of NPDWC: ability to work from a strength-based, culturally safe, harm reduction approach.
Knowledge of the resources available in the community to women experiencing poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, and/or addictions.
Knowledge of the current and historical effects of colonization on Indigenous people and experience supporting people to access traditional practices, reclaim culture, and navigate the unique barriers they face.
Lived experience of overcoming housing insecurity, poverty and/or marginalization is welcomed and an asset.
Valid Class 5 driver’s license with satisfactory Driver’s Abstract is an asset.
Strong self-awareness, able to engage complex situations with clarity and respect for all.
Strong conflict resolution skills; comfortable engaging with and de-escalating conflict.
Strong background in community organising, with high level abilities in working with and across diverse individuals and communities.
Ability to work with women, men, and children in a drop-in environment.
Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities.
Demonstrated ability to support individuals experiencing a crisis or emergency.
Strong oral and written communication skills, including knowledge and use of standard computer programs.
Satisfactory Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Check.
It is an operational requirement that this position be filled by a woman or gender-diverse person.
Post-secondary education in community development, counselling, or other relevant discipline is an asset but not required.
Valid First Aid & CPR certification or willingness to obtain certification.
Valid Naloxone administration certification or willingness to obtain certification.
Valid Food Handler’s certification or willingness to obtain certification.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Follow NPDWC policies, procedures, and respect guidelines.
Attend all team meetings, learning gatherings, training, and other events as needed.
Engage in clear and effective communication.
Welcome visitors into the Centre and continuously promote a community understanding of the Centre’s mission, vision, objectives, policies, programs, and services.
Build relationships with drop-in participants and, where appropriate, help them navigate to other programs and services at NPDWC and/or to other partnering agencies.
Data entry related to program requirements.
Maintain cleanliness and sanitization of common spaces inside and outside the Centre.
To act as the frontline liaison between participants and all programs and services.
Provide consistent, high-quality, low-barrier access to services such as meeting basic needs, resources and referrals, providing information, engaging in events and activities, and more.
Administrative duties such as answering phones, faxing, photocopying, etc.
Respond to and document incidents in the drop-in as needed.
Other duties as assigned, consistent with this job description and approved by Centre policies, procedures, and the Executive Director.
