Job Summary
The Assistant Manager provides support with hiring, reporting, planning and on-hill assistance and set-up for the delivery of Adventure and Education programs. The role is critical to support our Educators and Adventure Guides so that they can focus on managing groups visiting Grouse Mountain. This person would be under the supervision of the Manager for Education, Adventures and Wildlife and would work in conjunction with and support the Education and Adventures Sales Coordinator role and Education and Adventure Program Supervisor to ensure a smooth delivery of the programs.
Essential Job Functions
- Support planning and implementation of the fiscal sales, business development strategy and program plan for the following areas:
- Education Programs
- Adventure Programs
- Corporate Adventure Training (CAT) Programs
- Snowshoe Programs
- Summer Adventure Camp Programs
- Assist in the design and implementation of new programs for the areas listed above
- Assist in the design and updating of new curriculum for educational field trips to align with the BC Curriculum for science, social studies, and physical education
- Oversee daily operations with summer Adventure Camps and be on radio to step in support our teams
- Help manage the guest/group experience and ensure service standards are met or exceeded to achieve a high Net Promotor Score
- Work with Education and Adventures Manager and Guest Services Manager to respond to all guest comments or inquiries
- In conjunction with the Education and Adventure Manager assist with hiring, training, leading and coordinating a team of up to 60 employees including Adventure Camp Leaders, Education Leaders and Adventure Guides
- Logistical support for our First Nations and Feasthouse programs and maintaining a positive work environment with our First Nations interpretive team
- Promoting a positive work environment and culture by leading by example and maintaining strong and supportive relationships with all staff
- Maintaining the profitability of the Adventure Programs & Education department with the parameters of the specific budget
- Following forecasted labour budgets, controlling labour to keep in line with current and forecasted events
- Reviewing monthly fiscal reports to assist in managing expenses and labor and target revenue
- Developing relationships and maintaining communication with leaders in other departments, in specific to coordinate assistance for our programs and for large scale events and groups
- Maintaining inventory management for all materials, supplies and educational artifacts used for program offerings
- Assist with planning and executing annual Provincial Pro-D Day Teacher’s Open House each October
- Support in utilization, maintenance and inventory of snowshoe fleet
- Ensuring adherence to HR policies and procedures within the department
- Assisting with probation and annual performance evaluations for team members
- As a valued member of the management team, you may be required for duties within the department but outside of your regular role
- All other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibility Provides support to a team of up to 60 employees, including Adventure Camp Leaders, Education Leaders and Adventure Guides.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES
- Bachelor degree of Education or Business preferred or equivalent combination of training and experience required
- 1-2 years proven experience in management/supervisory role
- Experience and qualifications preferred in at least 2 of the following areas: Outdoor Education, First Nations, Wildlife/Ecology, Physical Education, Health/Wellness, Sustainability, Tourism, Corporate training, Facilitation and demonstrated leadership.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of staff and external contacts
- Awareness and demonstrated sensitivity towards British Columbia’s rich First Nations history and culture
- Understanding of SQL database reports and PowerBI reporting an asset
- Strong problem solving & decision-making skills
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including opening, closing, weekends, and holidays
- High energy and a strong work ethic
- Able to work outside in a variety of weather conditions
- Basic knowledge of reservation and/or sales software systems (such as Tripleseat and Siriusware) and strong knowledge of MS Office to assist in office support
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds in snowshoe equipment for purposes of set-up and put-away
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively lead others through tasks
- Excellent communication skills both orally and written, communication skills in French & other languages are an asset
- Successful candidate must complete a criminal record check once offered the position. The check must be completed prior to start date if you are 19 years and older. Grouse Mountain will assist you with the process.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Hours of operation are seasonal and weather dependent. Due to the nature of the business, this position requires flexibility in terms of your work schedule. A variety of work schedules may include day/evening shifts, and weekends and statutory holidays. Shifts might require standing for long periods of time, lifting, twisting and other manual tasks. Majority of the work is indoor work with the occasional need to be outside in the elements.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$56,000 to $62,000 annually
