Summary

We are looking for a Marketing Engineer & Director of AEO to own how our brand is discovered, understood, cited, and recommended across search engines, answer engines, AI assistants, and LLM-powered discovery surfaces.

This is not a traditional SEO role. It is a systems-building marketing engineering role with AEO and technical search as the primary mandate: improving how our content, product, entities, and thought leadership appear in high-intent answers across Google, Bing, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and emerging AI-native search experiences.

The ideal candidate is a highly technical organic growth operator who can code, work with APIs and data systems, and manage production agents that help Marketing, Content, Product, Engineering, and Analytics teams move faster.

As a people leader, this person will also manage and develop the web team, ensuring our web properties, technical infrastructure, analytics, and visibility roadmap are aligned to business growth priorities.

What You Will Do

Own the technical AEO, SEO, and AI search visibility roadmap across the website, landing pages, documentation, product content, content hubs, machine-readable brand assets, answer engines, LLMs, AI search interfaces, and traditional search engines.
Build and maintain automated workflows that monitor answer presence, citation quality, share of voice, content gaps, competitive movement, structured data health, crawl issues, and technical site performance.
Design and manage production agents that support search visibility, content intelligence, technical QA, SERP analysis, AI answer monitoring, internal linking, schema validation, and opportunity discovery.
Create and maintain AI-readable knowledge layers, entity maps, structured content repositories, prompt libraries, evaluation sets, and documentation that make the brand easier for machines and humans to understand.
Partner with Engineering to ship technical SEO and AEO improvements, including structured data, site architecture, rendering fixes, canonicalization, performance improvements, internal linking systems, and scalable content infrastructure.
Partner with Content and Brand teams to create content that performs in both classic search results and AI-generated answers.
Build dashboards and reporting systems that connect technical visibility improvements to organic traffic, brand visibility, answer engine citations, pipeline influence, qualified demand, or revenue impact.
Evaluate emerging LLM, search, and AI answer engine developments, then translate them into practical experiments, tooling, and operating practices.
Document repeatable playbooks, technical standards, and workflows so AEO and technical search best practices scale across the organization.
Lead, coach, and manage a team of web managers and developers, ensuring clear priorities, execution excellence, and ongoing professional development.

What We Are Looking For

Proven experience leading technical SEO, AEO, organic growth, marketing engineering, or technical content visibility programs with measurable business impact.
Strong technical SEO foundation, including crawlability, indexation, rendering, JavaScript SEO, schema.org, structured data, XML sitemaps, robots.txt, canonical tags, internal linking, page speed, Core Web Vitals, and site architecture.
Hands-on understanding of answer engine optimization, including LLM retrievability, entity authority, citation likelihood, semantic coverage, structured content, knowledge graphs, and AI-generated answer behavior.
Ability to code or script well enough to build automation, prototypes, production workflows, API integrations, QA checks, and internal tools.
Experience building, operating, or managing production agents, automations, or AI workflows used by real teams.
Comfort working with APIs, crawlers, webhooks, workflow automation platforms, LLMs, prompt systems, structured datasets, and AI evaluation methods.
Strong analytical skills and comfort querying, transforming, and interpreting data from search platforms, analytics tools, crawlers, warehouses, and third-party visibility platforms.
Ability to partner effectively with Engineering, Product, Marketing, Content, Analytics, and Revenue teams.
A builder mindset: you do not just produce recommendations; you ship systems that improve visibility, speed, and decision-making.
Proven experience managing technical or web teams, including developers, web managers, or cross-functional digital specialists.

Technical Skills & Tooling

GitHub, VSCode, Git, command-line workflows, and technical documentation practices.
HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, SQL, or similar languages used to inspect, automate, and improve web and data systems.
Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4, Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, Ahrefs, Semrush, Botify, Conductor, or similar tools.
Schema.org, structured data validation, log analysis, crawl analysis, technical SEO QA, and content performance diagnostics.
LLM and agent tooling such as OpenAI, Anthropic, LangChain, CrewAI, n8n, Zapier, Make, Gumloop, or comparable systems.
Data platforms such as Snowflake, BigQuery, dbt, Fivetran, Census, Hightouch, Looker, Mode, Hex, Tableau, Metabase, or similar platforms.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, Marketing, Business, Communications, or a related field preferred. Equivalent hands-on experience in technical SEO, AEO, marketing engineering, web development, analytics, automation, or AI-enabled workflows will also be strongly considered.

Nice to Have

Experience with AI visibility, AEO, or answer engine monitoring platforms such as Profound, Peec, Scrunch, or similar tools.
Natural curiosity about LLM architecture, retrieval, embeddings, RAG systems, agentic workflows, model evaluation, and the changing relationship between content, authority, and machine-generated answers.
Hands-on experience evaluating AI-native discovery environments, prompt behaviours, citation patterns, and answer quality across platforms.
Experience scaling technical search or content intelligence systems across multiple brands, business units, regions, or product lines.
Knowledge of Snowflake or other modern data warehouse environments, including data modeling, pipeline logic, and governance considerations.
Experience with entity SEO, knowledge graphs, semantic search, vector databases, or structured brand knowledge systems.
Experience in B2B SaaS, AI, developer tools, fintech, marketplaces, or another technically complex category.

The company has a stronger technical search foundation that improves discoverability, supports qualified demand, and reduces friction for high-intent buyers.

The brand is more consistently and accurately represented in the places buyers now research, compare, and shortlist vendors: AI-generated answers, answer engines, and high-intent search experiences.

Production workflows and agents reduce manual SEO and content operations work while increasing speed, consistency, quality, and the team's ability to act on visibility opportunities.

Marketing, Content, Brand, Web, and Analytics teams actively use the systems this person builds because they improve both execution quality and measurable business results.

Leadership has clear reporting that connects answer engine visibility, technical site health, content coverage, share of voice, pipeline influence, and revenue impact.

AEO and technical search become repeatable operating practices across Marketing, Content, Web, and Analytics - not one-off projects.

Compensation & Location

The base salary range for this role is $150,000-$200,000 CAD, depending on experience, technical depth, scope, and demonstrated impact.

This role is ideally located in Toronto, Ontario and we are targeting a start date of January 1, 2027. Hybrid may be considered for exceptional candidates, with a preference for people who can collaborate effectively with Toronto-based stakeholders.
