Are you passionate about creating safer workplaces, improving processes, and helping organizations build a strong safety culture?

Nova Scotia Power is hiring for two Safety Co-op opportunities within our Corporate Safety team for the Winter 2027 term. These roles offer students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting safety programs, continuous improvement initiatives, and enterprise-wide safety management systems.

We are seeking students interested in one of the following streams:

1. Safety Continuous Improvement Co-op

Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Ideal for students in Industrial Engineering or related disciplines interested in process improvement, systems thinking, analytics, and operational excellence.

2. Safety Programs Co-op

Location: Sydney, Nova Scotia
Ideal for students in Occupational Health & Safety or related disciplines interested in safety programs, training, safety management systems, and employee engagement.

During your work term, you'll contribute to projects that support Nova Scotia Power's Safety Management System (SMS), safety programs, risk management processes, digital platforms, and employee education initiatives. You'll work alongside experienced safety professionals while helping advance a proactive safety culture across the organization.

What you’ll do:

Depending on your assigned stream, you may have the opportunity to:

Safety Continuous Improvement Co-op (Halifax)

Support continuous improvement initiatives related to Nova Scotia Power's Safety Management System (SMS).
Analyze safety-related processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and user experience.
Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and analytics using Power BI.
Support automation initiatives using Microsoft Power Apps and other digital tools.
Explore opportunities to leverage AI-enabled technologies to improve safety processes and information management.
Assist with the collection, organization, and analysis of safety data and performance metrics.
Support workshops and improvement projects focused on operational excellence and safety performance.

Safety Programs Co-op (Sydney)

Support the development and enhancement of Nova Scotia Power's Safety Programs and Risk Registry.
Assist with the development of safety resources, educational materials, and training content.
Support the administration and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System.
Assist with the maintenance of digital information platforms used to communicate safety programs and resources.
Promote employee awareness and engagement through safety initiatives and communications.
Collaborate with safety professionals to support program implementation and continuous improvement efforts.

Both Positions

Collaborate with safety and operational teams to support departmental objectives.
Participate in team meetings, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
Contribute to process improvements, documentation, and project activities as assigned.

Who you are:

We're looking for curious, motivated students who are passionate about safety, continuous improvement, and making a positive impact in the workplace. You will be a strong candidate if you:

Are currently enrolled in the first or second year of a two-year Occupational Health & Safety diploma program, or in a related undergraduate program such as Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline, and are participating in a co-op program.
Possess strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Are comfortable working with data, documentation, and process improvement initiatives.
Have excellent attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality work.
Work effectively both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
Demonstrate initiative, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
Have strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.

For the Safety Continuous Improvement Co-op (Halifax), experience or coursework related to Power BI, Microsoft Power Apps, automation, process improvement, data analytics, AI tools, or continuous improvement methodologies would be considered a strong asset.

For the Safety Programs Co-op (Sydney), an interest in workplace safety, safety management systems, training development, employee engagement, and safety program administration would be considered a strong asset.
