Original job description

The role

You'll help open nutbar's first U.S. location and be the General Manager's right hand from build-out to opening day and beyond. Reporting directly to the GM, you'll run shifts, lead the floor and own training for the whole team, so every new hire can work every station to nutbar standard.

You'll run the store day to day within the KPIs and budgets the GM sets, and help the team hit them on every shift. You'll support hiring alongside the GM, and step in to lead the store whenever the GM is off-site. This role suits someone who loves building teams and is ready to grow into a GM.

What you'll do

Help open nutbar New York

  • Support the opening. Work with the GM on the pre-opening timeline and help take the store from empty room to opening day on schedule.
  • Get inspection-ready. Help prepare for health inspections, and set up the logs, checklists and routines that keep the store compliant with New York City requirements.
  • Protect the recipe. Learn every recipe in Toronto and make sure our nutmilk, smoothies and menu taste exactly the same in New York.
  • Set up the systems. Help set up POS, scheduling, inventory and ordering, and document opening and closing routines as you go.
  • Launch with the team. Support pre-opening activations, soft opening and opening day alongside the GM and our marketing team.

Train the team (a big part of this role)

  • Own training. Run onboarding and station training for every new hire, using nutbar's training materials and with support from our Toronto team.
  • Get every hire to standard. Make sure each new team member completes onboarding within their first 10 shifts, including recipe, service and food-safety competency.
  • Build the training calendar. Schedule and track training, refreshers and menu launches, and keep training records complete.
  • Develop shift leads. Train team members to run shifts as manager on duty, so the store always has strong leadership coverage.
  • Coach in the moment. Give real-time feedback on the floor, and support the GM with one-on-ones and performance reviews.

Support hiring

  • Help build the opening team. Source candidates, screen applicants, join interviews and share your recommendations with the GM, who makes final hiring decisions.
  • Keep the store staffed. Flag staffing gaps early and help fill open frontline roles quickly.
  • Onboard new hires. Make sure every new team member has a great first week and knows what's expected.

Run shifts within our KPIs and budgets

  • Work to the plan. Run every shift within the labour, food cost and waste targets the GM sets, and flag anything off-track right away.
  • Schedule and deploy. Help build schedules and position the team to match traffic, protect the guest experience and stay within the labour target.
  • Manage inventory day to day. Support ordering, receiving, counts, rotation and waste tracking against set pars.
  • Safeguard cash. Handle opening and closing cash, deposits and POS reconciliation to nutbar's procedures.
  • Report back. Share shift notes and results with the GM, and help put corrective actions in place.

Lead the floor and the guest experience

  • Be the standard. Work the floor during peak periods across every station, and show the team what excellent service, speed and consistency look like.
  • Introduce New York to nutbar. Explain the brand, the menu and our nutmilk with confidence to guests who've never heard of us.
  • Make someone's day. Coach the team to notice the moments when a small, personal gesture turns an ordinary visit into a memorable one.
  • Recover well. Resolve guest feedback and complaints with warmth, and escalate recurring issues to the GM.

Keep the store running

  • Hold food standards. Make sure every item is made to recipe, and run daily quality and consistency spot checks.
  • Own health and safety on shift. Keep the store inspection-ready, and enforce food safety, allergen and cleanliness standards on every shift.
  • Hold the look and feel. Keep music, lighting, temperature, retail displays and cleanliness to nutbar standards.
  • Lead when the GM is out. Step in as the store's leader on the GM's days off, and keep standards and commitments on track.
Your first 90 days
  • Pre-opening: Learn every station, recipe and system, including time training with our Toronto team. Help the GM hire the opening team, then lead their training so everyone is ready on day one.
  • Days 1–30 after opening: Run shifts confidently. Hit service and quality standards every day, and close training gaps the first weeks reveal.
  • Days 31–60: Take ownership of the training calendar, shift-lead development and daily inventory routines. Run shifts on target for labour and waste.
  • Days 61–90: Have at least two team members trained to run shifts, lead the store on the GM's days off, and help document the U.S. training playbook.
What you'll bring
  • 2+ years of supervisory or assistant-management experience in a café, restaurant or hospitality setting, ideally high-volume fast-casual or quick-service
  • Hands-on experience training teams, ideally including building or running a training program
  • Experience supporting hiring: screening, interviewing and onboarding
  • Comfort running shifts to labour, food cost and waste targets, and working with inventory and cash procedures
  • Experience opening a new location (a strong plus)
  • Knowledge of New York City food service and health requirements
  • Comfort with POS and scheduling systems (Square, Push), delivery platforms and spreadsheets
  • Calm, clear decision-making under pressure, and an eye for detail that won't compromise on product, cleanliness or guest experience
  • A real passion for food, wellness and hospitality
  • Availability for varied days and hours, including weekends, with on-call coverage during operating hours
  • NYC Food Protection Certificate (required, or obtained before opening)
  • Ability to travel to Toronto for up to a month of paid training before opening, with a valid passport and any travel documents required to enter Canada, or the ability to get them before training
What we offer
  • Starting salary of $65,000 per year + Tips
  • Discount on nutbar food and retail

  • A clear path to General Manager
