The Domain Enterprise Architect - Downstream is accountable for the architecture of Nutrien's Retail and grower-facing business domain. The role connects business strategy, customer and grower outcomes, value streams and capabilities to information, applications, and technology; maintains the domain target state and transition roadmap; and provides architecture direction before significant investment commitments. Working within a centralized EA CoE, this architect brings a One Nutrien perspective to the Downstream portfolio while recognizing legitimate regional, market and operating differences.
What You'll Do:
Business outcomes and capability architecture
- Develop and maintain business capability maps, taxonomies, and value streams in partnership with business leaders
- Translate business strategies, operating priorities and measurable outcomes into capability implications and architecture requirements
- Assess capability maturity, strategic importance, differentiation, pain points, duplication, and investment needs using common EA CoE methods
- Connect business outcomes and value streams to information, applications, integrations, technology platforms, and organizational dependencies
- Create concise, decision-ready views that make cost, risk, complexity, opportunity, and trade-offs understandable to business and IT leaders
- Domain architecture and strategic roadmaps
- Own and maintain the domain current-state, target-state, and transition architectures at an appropriate level of detail for strategic decision-making
- Develop an actionable, multi-year domain architecture roadmap aligned with enterprise strategy, the ERP Five-Year Plan and approved investment priorities
- Define transition states, sequencing assumptions, dependencies, architecture risks, and decision points required to move from current to target state
- Provide domain capability requirements and business context to Application, Data, Integration, Technology, Security and ERP architects; collaborate on integrated enterprise roadmaps
- Maintain architecture products, decisions, dependencies, and roadmaps in the approved EA repository and refresh them when business strategy, investment priorities or the technology landscape materially changes
- Some of the above responsibilities involve working within the EA team and collaborating with other CoEs
- Domain specific knowledge and industry experience is required to streamline the collaboration with BRM and business stakeholders as needed
- Working closely with the BRMs and business stakeholders to support their strategic technology needs
Investment shaping and portfolio transparency
- Provide architecture point of view (PoV) for material investments before solution or vendor commitments are made, covering target-state fit, reuse, duplication, options, dependencies, lifecycle risk, technical debt, and total-cost drivers
- Partner with BRM during demand shaping: BRM owns demand, sponsorship, value case, and outcome continuity; the Domain EA owns architectural fit, options and enterprise coherence
- Support/Partner with Portfolio and Finance to make capability gaps, architecture dependencies, lifecycle exposure and investment trade-offs visible; Portfolio and Finance retain prioritization, funding and financial-validation authority
- Identify opportunities to reuse, consolidate, modernize or retire capabilities and applications, and route recommendations to the accountable business, product, platform and portfolio owners
- Maintain a domain view of architecture-related technical debt and exceptions, including business impact, accountable owner, remediation path and review date
Architecture governance and assurance
- Apply enterprise principles, standards, reference architectures and approved patterns through early, risk-based engagement
- Determine whether proposed changes conform to the approved domain target state within delegated authority; recommend material exceptions and unresolved cross-domain decisions to the EA Design Authority or Architecture Review Board
- Document architecture decisions, conditions, risks, exceptions and expiry or review dates in the approved system of record
- Provide architecture assurance at agreed lifecycle points and verify that material decisions and conditions are reflected in solution designs and delivery evidence
- Use pre-approved patterns, proportionate review and governance by exception to improve decision speed without weakening enterprise accountability
- Collaboration, influence and EA practice development
- Serve as a trusted architecture advisor to senior business and IT leaders, framing options and recommendations in terms of outcomes, cost, risk, resilience, speed and value
- Facilitate cross-functional decisions and surface conflicting assumptions, duplicated activity and ownership gaps early
- Collaborate with other Domain EAs to manage end-to-end value streams and cross-domain dependencies
- Contribute domain analysis to merger, acquisition, divestiture and separation assessments using EA CoE playbooks and governance
- Help mature EA CoE methods, reusable assets, service measures, communities of practice and architecture literacy across Nutrien
Domain-specific accountabilities
- Maintain the architecture view for customer and grower engagement, account and channel management, commercial programs, pricing, product and service offers, agronomy services, retail branch enablement, digital commerce, customer service and the Downstream portions of order-to-cash and fulfillment
- Identify opportunities to simplify customer, vendor and channel processes and reduce branch-level or regional workarounds while protecting capabilities that legitimately differentiate markets or customer experiences
- Represent Retail seasonality, multi-site operations, grower experience, commercial agility and channel considerations in enterprise ERP, data, integration, security and technology roadmaps
- Co-own architecture interfaces with the Midstream Domain EA for inventory visibility, availability, order promising, fulfillment, delivery and customer-service dependencies
- Provide Downstream capability and transition implications for acquisitions, divestitures, branch integrations and separations
Measures of success
- Priority business outcomes and investments are traceable to endorsed capabilities, target states and roadmap decisions
- Architecture guidance is delivered early enough to influence demand shaping, funding, vendor selection and solution direction
- Domain roadmaps are current, jointly understood and used in planning and portfolio decisions
- Material cross-domain dependencies, architecture risks, exceptions and technical debt have named owners and transparent disposition
- Reuse, consolidation, modernization and retirement opportunities are identified and progressed through accountable portfolio owners
- Stakeholders report improved clarity, decision quality and confidence in the EA engagement model
- EA repository content for the assigned domain is complete, current, connected and usable for decision-making
What You'll Bring:
- Undergraduate degree from a recognized university in Business, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
- Minimum 15 or more years of progressive experience across enterprise architecture, business architecture, domain architecture, strategy or large-scale transformation in a complex organization
- Demonstrated experience developing capability models, value-stream views, current and target architectures, transition roadmaps and executive decision materials
- Demonstrated ability to connect business outcomes with technology, security and operating-model implications
- Practical experience with architecture governance, standards, exception management and architecture repositories
- Business and financial literacy sufficient to discuss value drivers, total-cost implications, investment trade-offs and risk
- Ability to translate business impact, cost and risk from enterprise technology lens perspective
- Strong executive communication, facilitation, structured problem-solving and influence without authority
- Strong knowledge of Retail or customer-facing value chains, including customer and channel management, pricing, commercial programs, order-to-cash and service processes
- Experience in agriculture, retail, distribution or another complex, multi-site customer-facing environment will be an asset
- Solid understanding of Order to Cash cycle and its variations from sales perspective
- Ability and willingness to travel 15-20% as required by the role
- Great communication and visual storytelling skills
- Ability and desire to collaborate, facilitate and constructively challenge ideas
- Strong curiosity and learning agility about business and technology
- Willingness to learn, work and deliver across enterprise teams outside of your domain
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in Business, Finance, Supply Chain, Engineering, Information Systems or a related field
- TOGAF, Certified Business Architect, ArchiMate or equivalent architecture certification
- Experience helping establish or mature an EA practice, service catalogue, governance model or design authority
- Prior consulting or systems-integration experience in complex, multi-business environments
- Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, carve-outs or enterprise integration
- Exposure to digital commerce, CRM, customer-experience platforms and retail operations
