Are you someone passionate about reshaping the mining industry from early-stage planning to relinquishment and making a positive impact through mine planning work?
If that sounds like you, we’d love to meet you. We are growing and are on the lookout for an ambitious Student Mining Engineer to join our dynamic team for an 8–12-month co-op term. This placement is based in Okane’s Calgary office, so applicants must be willing to relocate to Calgary for the duration of the term. Come be a part of a visionary journey that is all about making a positive impact.
At Okane, we believe that integrated mine and closure planning is just the starting point to ‘Help Create a Better Tomorrow’. We work with mining companies to return land responsibly and safely, enabling what comes next to serve both people and the planet. Our work challenges the status quo - we advocate for meaningful partnerships with communities, including Indigenous rightsholders, and design solutions that create lasting financial, environmental, and social value. From early-stage planning through to relinquishment, we’re helping reshape the future of mining - and we’re looking for people who want to be part of that transformation.
Responsibilities:
In this role, you will work closely with our mining clients and technical teams on projects that span diverse sites with unique challenges to develop practical solutions for mine planning and closure.
Your work will include:
- In our fast-paced environment, your adaptability and prioritization skills will shine as you navigate unexpected challenges. As well as engaging in our critical thinking process, evaluating and recommending clever solutions in your work.
- You actively integrate health, safety and environmental considerations into every aspect of your work. This may look like completing hazard assessments and other HSE project requirements, following internal procedures and policies, participating in safety training, and promoting a safety culture.
- You’ll participate in background reviews that support the development of conceptual models. This is a great opportunity for you to learn about mine planning and get involved in creating detailed mine plans, material balances, and schedules that are essential for integrated life-of-mine and closure plans.
- You'll get to work closely with our experienced teams in geotechnical, geoscience, hydrology, and geochemistry.
- You’ll help design mine and tailings plans using engineering software.
- You’ll also have the chance to learn how to prepare cost estimates for projects and assist in writing technical documentation under the guidance of your mentors. This will be a fantastic learning experience as you contribute to proposals and technical reports that showcase our work.
- As you grow in your role, you’ll interact with both internal teams and external stakeholders, helping to build strong relationships.
- You’ll also assist in planning and conducting field investigations, such as material sampling programs, which will give you hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of mine planning operations.
Expectations for this Role:
- General understanding of mining process, lifecycle and mine closure concepts.
- Possess skills including communication, accountability, honesty, empathy, creativity, responsibility, and flexibility.
- Embody Okane’s Core Vision (Help Create a Better Tomorrow).
- You consistently model Okane Core Values (Passionate, Smart and Clever, Positive, Thoughtful and Caring, and Humble).
- You can adapt and prioritize navigating unexpected challenges.
- You actively engage in our critical thinking process, evaluating and recommending clever solutions in your work.
- You are comfortable working flexibly across time zones and travelling from time to time.
Qualifications:
- If you're currently enrolled in a undergraduate Mining Engineering or related engineering program and are eligible for a co-op work term.
- Familiarity with mine design and scheduling software such as Deswik CAD, Hexagon MinePlan, or RPM MinePlanner would be fantastic.
- Willingness and availability to travel to project sites as required, including occasional site rotations.
- Strong critical thinking skills to help you analyze information and evaluate various issues and risks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must, as you'll interact with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong time management skills to help you manage tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
