Original job description

Are you someone passionate about reshaping the mining industry from early-stage planning to relinquishment and making a positive impact through geotechnical work?

If that sounds like you, we’d love to meet you. We are growing and are on the lookout for an ambitious Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our dynamic team. Come be a part of a visionary journey that is all about making a positive impact. This role is open to our Calgary or Saskatoon offices.

At Okane, we believe that integrated mine and closure planning is just the starting point to ‘Help Create a Better Tomorrow’. We work with mining companies to return land responsibly and safely, enabling what comes next to serve both people and the planet. Our work challenges the status quo - we advocate for meaningful partnerships with communities, including Indigenous rightsholders, and design solutions that create lasting financial, environmental, and social value. From early-stage planning through to relinquishment, we’re helping reshape the future of mining - and we’re looking for people who want to be part of that transformation.

Responsibilities:

In this role, you will work closely with our mining clients and technical teams on projects that span diverse sites with unique challenges to develop practical solutions for tailings management.

Your work will include:

  • You will apply advanced geotechnical principles to develop and lead innovative problem-solving approaches and guide development of conceptual models in support of closure plan development and design.
  • You will apply advanced knowledge of geotechnical assessment and design, instrumentation and monitoring, tailings and mine rock characterization and closure plan development.
  • You will participate in numerical modelling programs to assess geotechnical stability, liquefaction, and consolidation assessments and review and interpret laboratory and monitoring data to support design and execution.
  • You will interact competently with both internal and external stakeholders who possess varying levels of expertise. Developing and maintaining strong relationships with clients is crucial, as it helps foster existing relationships and can lead to generating new leads, opportunities, or referrals.
  • You will plan and execute field investigations to support tailings and mine projects as project needs are warranted.
  • You will travel to the field for facility inspections and summarize observations in the field under the supervision of the Engineer of Record.
  • You will be responsible for supporting the proposal development process by outlining work scopes and estimating both project schedules and costs. Also, you will prepare, review, and authenticate advanced technical documentation and reports to guarantee their technical quality and assurance.
  • You will support the facilitation of workshops, including risk assessments and multiple accounts analyses with various stakeholders and external project support.

Expectations for this Role:

  • You will develop a strong understanding of material characterization, including fill and tailings materials, alongside fundamental knowledge of geotechnical design, slope stability, and seepage.
  • You’ll build strong professional relationships with clients and actively engage in business development initiatives, exploring innovative opportunities beyond your project scope. Your insights will be vital as you communicate with our technical leaders.
  • In our fast-paced environment, your adaptability and prioritization skills will shine as you navigate unexpected challenges. You'll develop your critical thinking skills by formulating important insights and translating those into practical recommendations for our clients.

-You model Okane’s Core Values in every client interaction and are a trusted voice within the team.

-You actively integrate health, safety and environmental considerations into every aspect of your work. This may look like completing hazard assessments and other HSE project requirements, following internal procedures and policies, participating in safety training, and promoting a safety culture.

  • You will have a robust working knowledge of regulatory and legislative frameworks, including the Global International Standard for Tailings Management (GISTM).

-Your ability and willingness to coordinate with staff and clients across different time zones will enhance collaboration.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate degree in Geotechnical (Civil or Geological) Engineering or similar discipline is required along with a minimum of six (6) years professional experience
  • Proven experience in mine and tailings operations is desired, with operational or closure experience within the industry considered an asset.
  • Experience in geological sciences, field investigations and tailings management, including initial assessment, modelling and design.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Holds professional designation in residing province.
  • Experience with relevant software packages such as GeoStudio will be beneficial.
  • Experience and aptitude for multidisciplinary work and dynamic team environments.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for both business and technical writing and clear and effective collaboration within project teams.
  • Ability to oversee and lead project work within the Geotechnical discipline.
