The Opportunity: Instructor, Information Technology (full-time, permanent)
The instructor in Information Technology is responsible for development and teaching in the new Olds College Information Technology Diploma program. The Information Technology Diploma prepares students to operate and enhance enterprise IT, covering networking, systems (Windows/Linux), virtualization, storage, cloud computing, security, monitoring, and automation. The program emphasizes experiential learning that integrates practical application with IT Service Management principles and responsible AI use in IT workflows. Graduates can manage networks and servers, deploy secure cloud solutions, automate IT tasks, and document processes clearly.
Instructor responsibilities include the planning, preparation, and delivery of instruction and assessment of learners. Along with the development of curriculum for the new program. This position also includes administrative duties, engagement with teams in the Werklund School of Agriculture and Technology (WSAT), liaising with industry representatives and working with other College departments, as required.
Key Job Functions:
- Development of information technology course curriculum for the new program.
- Plan and prepare for instruction, including course content development.
- Delivery of instruction considering various learning styles and needs.
- Assess and report on student progress.
- Work with other College departments to facilitate learner success (for example, accommodation services).
- Create a learning environment that encourages student engagement and participation.
- Be accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for guiding and mentoring students in matters related to academic success.
- Liaison with industry, government and community representatives, as required.
- Monitor classroom supplies and tools inventory, as required.
- Perform various tasks to support student success:
- First point of contact for student concerns in the courses directly responsible for
- Monitor student performance and behaviour
- Submit reports, information and forms as required
- Maintain confidentiality and security of student information
- Learn and apply technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate (for example, learning management system platforms, Google Suite, etc.)
- Collaborate with other instructors/instructional assistants within the related program(s) for coordination and aligning student learning experiences.
- Perform other activities related to instructional assignment, coordinate activities within a program or programs; and participate in WSAT and broader College advancement.
Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge Required:
- An information technology bachelor’s degree is required.
- Minimum 4 years work experience in the information technology sector; or a combination of work experience and/or industry certification in information technology.
- Information technology specific knowledge and understanding is required in the following areas:
- Network engineering - the ability to plan, configure, and secure small‑to‑medium enterprise (SME) networks, including VLANs, routing, VPN, QoS, and wireless.
- Systems administration: the ability to manage Windows and Linux environments with integrated identity, access management, and policy controls.
- Virtualization & storage: the ability to implement virtualization and storage solutions to meet availability, performance, and recovery objectives.
- Cloud & infrastructure as code: the ability to deploy, administer, and automate cloud resources with security and cost awareness.
- Security operations: the ability to implement security controls, conduct risk assessments, and execute incident response procedures to protect organizational assets and maintain business continuity.
- Automation & scripting: the ability to script and automate IT workflows using PowerShell/Bash with sound testing and documentation.
- Service management & reliability: the ability to apply IT Service Management (ITSM) practices and observability techniques to maintain Service Level Objectives (SLOs).
- Responsible AIOps & professional practice: the ability to apply governance frameworks and ethical guardrails when evaluating and deploying emerging technologies, including AI tools, to ensure alignment with organizational policies and professional standards.
- Knowledge, skills, and/or training in instruction/teaching would be an asset.
- Ability to meet deadlines, work independently, resolve problems and make decisions in accordance with College policies and procedures.
- Knowledge and skills in current technology applications relevant to the course and program content.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral), including the ability to communicate technical concepts, solutions, and recommendations to diverse stakeholders.
- Experience with international students would be an asset.
