A Day in the Life
As an Water Resource Engineer-In-Training in our Edmonton or Calgary office, you’ll be responsible for assisting multiple projects where you will have increasing interaction with our multi-disciplinary staff, regulatory agencies and clients. You will be part of a strong team of committed professionals.
The compensation range for this role is $26.00 to $35.00, commensurate with experience, skills, and geographic location.
To thrive in this role, you’ll be comfortable taking ownership of the following responsibilities:
- Supporting hydraulic and hydrologic modelling for flood studies, floodplain mapping, river engineering, watercourse crossings, stormwater, and water management projects.
- Assisting with flood, erosion, scour, geomorphic, and other hydrotechnical assessments.
- Supporting the design and assessment of watercourse crossings, hydraulic structures, river engineering works, natural channels, and stream restoration projects.
- Supporting stormwater and drainage assessments and designs for infrastructure, industrial, transportation, and community projects.
- Preparing engineering calculations, technical reports, design drawings, specifications, and regulatory applications under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Conducting field investigations, site assessments, surveys, construction inspections, and post-construction monitoring.
- Supporting regulatory approvals, permitting, and instream construction planning.
- Coordinating with drafting and GIS staff to prepare figures, base plans, mapping, and design drawings.
- Supporting project delivery and working collaboratively with engineers, scientists, environmental specialists, clients, regulators, contractors, Indigenous communities, and other stakeholders.
- Developing technical skills and professional judgement through mentorship and increasing responsibility.
Your Expertise and Skills

- Field work varies by project and may account for approximately 5 to 30% of your time
- A bachelor's degree in Civil, Water Resources, or Environmental Engineering.
- 0 to 2 years of relevant experience in water resources engineering. Relevant co-op, internship, field, or project experience will be considered.
- Eligibility for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with APEGA.
- An understanding of hydrology, hydraulics, open-channel flow, and stormwater or drainage systems.
- An interest in river engineering, watercourse crossings, flood assessment, stormwater management, natural channel design, or related water resources work.
- Willingness to undertake field work and travel as required, including work at active construction sites.
- A valid class 5 driver’s license with no restrictions.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
