Original job description

Who We Are

The ONxpress Civils Contractor General Partnership, a partnership between FCC Canada Limited and Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., is a multidisciplinary Civils Joint Venture (CJV) team with global expertise in delivering innovative solutions for both railway and civil construction projects. Working under Alliance agreements with Metrolinx, the team is helping to modernize railway construction across the GO Transit network.

An Alliance framework, which is relatively new in Canada, is a collaborative partnership between the owner and contractor, who work together with a best-for-project mindset. By streamlining decision making, the Alliance helps ensure that high-quality work is delivered, certified, and transferred in a progressive, transparent, and risk-managed manner.

The Alliance operates with a core focus on safety, efficiency, and sustainability, while fostering strong relationships with stakeholders and rights-holders and contributing positively to local communities as a good neighbour. Through this collaborative approach, the Alliance is helping drive the modernization of key sections of the rail network as part of the GO Expansion Program.

If you're passionate about making a difference and want to be part of a progressive and modern way of working, we want to hear from you.

What is the Opportunity?

ONxpress Civil Contractors Joint Venture (CJV) is looking for an Assistant Superintendent to support construction operations across our rail and civil infrastructure works. This position is based out of our downtown Toronto office with regular presence on project sites.

What You’ll Do

As an Assistant Superintendent, you will support the Superintendent and Project Management team in delivering safe, high-quality construction work. Responsibilities include:

· Assist with day-to-day site supervision to ensure construction activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project plans.

· Coordinate subcontractors, crews, equipment, and materials to support daily and weekly work plans.

· Support review of technical design documents, shop drawings, and construction details for utilities, drainage, retaining walls, noise walls, OCS foundations, and other civil elements.

· Help maintain site documentation including reports, diaries, photos, and progress tracking.

· Assist in identifying construction risks and contribute to mitigation planning.

· Work with schedulers to provide field input for work sequencing and schedule updates.

· Monitor adherence to project specifications, quality control procedures, and safety requirements.

· Support procurement activities by coordinating delivery schedules and verifying quantities.

· Help enforce change procedures and communicate field-level impacts to the Project Management team.

· Participate in site meetings with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and internal teams.

· Assist with cost tracking, productivity monitoring, and forecasting.

· Ensure timely completion of inspections, testing, punch-lists, and close-out activities.

· Foster positive working relationships with crews, subcontractors, and stakeholders.

· Promote an inclusive, collaborative, and respectful work environment.

What You Bring

· Post-secondary education in engineering, construction management, or a related discipline.

· 5+ years of experience in civil construction, preferably on rail, infrastructure, or transportation projects.

· Experience working within rail corridors is an asset.

· Familiarity with Progressive Design-Build (PDB) delivery is an advantage.

· Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and work in a fast-paced environment.

· Proficiency with MS Office; exposure to scheduling or estimating software is beneficial.

· Ability to work effectively within a team and communicate clearly with diverse groups.

· Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and quality.

· A champion of inclusion and diversity.

Expected compensation for this role is between $115,000.00-130,000.00 annually. Base salaries are determined according to multiple factors including skills, experience and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into consideration. In addition to base salary ONxpress also offers a comprehensive medical and dental program, RRSP with company matching and the potential to participate in our discretionary, performance based bonus program.

This role is a backfill position.

As part of our commitment to fair and transparent hiring practices, ONxpress may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to assist in screening and reviewing candidates. These tools are applied responsibly and in accordance with applicable privacy laws and ONxpress’ AI Usage Policy. All final decisions are made by qualified ONxpress team members.

This position is with ONxpress Civils (“CJV” aka the Design & Construction team); the project segment responsible for the modernization and modification of the key area network, including countless innovations in the way the regional rail infrastructure is built.

We value diversity and encourage all qualified individuals to apply, regardless of whether they meet 100% of the qualifications listed. If you believe you have the skills and passion to excel in this role, we welcome your application and the opportunity to consider you for the position.
