Role: Manager, Software Development

Location: Richmond Hill, ON (Office-based)

The Manager, Software Development leads the newly formed engineering team delivering the Image & Fax Aviator Platform. This first-line manager will recruit, onboard, coach, and directly manage software engineers and technical specialists working across Java-based cloud services, Python-based AI and document intelligence, React user experiences, enterprise integrations, and platform operations. The role is accountable for day-to-day people leadership, Scrum execution, engineering delivery, quality, and operational readiness. The manager partners with Product Management and the Principal Engineer to translate strategy into executable plans while establishing an inclusive, accountable, and high-performing engineering culture.

Your Impact

Engineering Delivery

  • Own day-to-day execution across one or more Scrum teams and translate roadmap priorities into credible sprint and release plans.
  • Partner with Product Management to balance customer value, platform foundations, security, reliability, technical debt, and innovation.
  • Manage team capacity, dependencies, risks, milestones, and commitments while maintaining clear ownership.
  • Ensure increments include code, automated tests, security controls, documentation, observability, deployment automation, and support readiness.
  • Provide concise status, risk, staffing, and decision information to senior leadership.
  • Escalate material risks early and drive corrective action when scope, staffing, architecture, or dependencies threaten commitments.

People Leadership and Team Building

  • Recruit and onboard the initial eight external hires by the approved target date, then help scale the team to approximately 16 engineers.
  • Directly manage engineers and technical specialists, with effective delegation through senior engineers and technical leads.
  • Set clear performance expectations and provide frequent coaching, feedback, recognition, and career-development guidance.
  • Build an inclusive culture that values customer outcomes, transparency, ownership, collaboration, and technical excellence.
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition and HR on requisitions, interview plans, candidate assessment, selection, offers, and onboarding.
  • Address performance, engagement, retention, and team-health issues promptly and professionally.

Technical and Operational Leadership

  • Work with the Principal Engineer to establish standards for Java 17+, Spring Boot, Python, React/TypeScript, event-driven services, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, and cloud platforms.
  • Maintain enough technical depth to assess tradeoffs, challenge assumptions, support hiring decisions, and remove engineering blockers.
  • Drive secure-by-design practices for identity, authorization, tenant isolation, privacy, auditability, APIs, encryption, secrets, and software supply-chain controls.
  • Promote automated testing, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, OpenTelemetry, service-level objectives, and production monitoring.
  • Ensure architecture and delivery decisions support resilience, scalability, recoverability, cost management, and integration with existing products.
  • Lead incident follow-up, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions in a blameless, learning-oriented manner.

Agile and Scrum Leadership

  • Establish consistent Scrum practices including backlog refinement, sprint planning, daily standups, reviews, retrospectives, and release planning.
  • Coach engineers and Product Owners on well-formed user stories, acceptance criteria, estimation, Definition of Ready, and Definition of Done.
  • Use delivery metrics to improve predictability and flow, not to rank individuals or encourage unhealthy utilization targets.
  • Ensure blockers and dependencies are identified early and sprint commitments remain realistic.
  • Turn retrospective findings into measurable improvements while avoiding unnecessary ceremony.
  • Promote visible work status, shared accountability, and frequent demonstration of working software.

What You Need To Succeed

  • 8+ years of progressively responsible software engineering experience, including 5+ years of direct engineering people leadership.
  • Experience directly managing software engineers and technical specialists in a SaaS, cloud-platform, or enterprise-software organization.
  • Proven success recruiting and onboarding external engineering talent and building a new or rapidly growing team.
  • Demonstrated delivery ownership in Agile/Scrum environments with interdependent product workstreams.
  • Strong understanding of cloud-native microservices, distributed systems, APIs, event-driven architecture, containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, observability, and secure development.
  • Working knowledge of Java and Spring Boot sufficient to assess candidates, understand design tradeoffs, and guide execution.
  • Experience partnering with Product Management on roadmaps, backlogs, release plans, and measurable outcomes.
  • Experience coaching employees, managing performance, and handling difficult delivery or organizational situations.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with engineers, peers, candidates, and executives.
  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building a greenfield multi-tenant SaaS platform or standing up a new engineering team.
  • Experience directly leading a team of approximately 8 to 16 employees and delegating effectively through senior engineers and technical leads.
  • Experience with AI-enabled products, document intelligence, OCR, workflow automation, agents, or human-in-the-loop applications.
  • Experience with fax, communications, imaging, healthcare interoperability, content management, or regulated enterprise software.
  • Familiarity with Python, React/TypeScript, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Terraform, OpenTelemetry, and a major public cloud.
  • Experience managing distributed teams and collaborating across organizational boundaries.
  • Relevant cloud, Scrum, Agile, or engineering-management certification.
