Combustion Turbine Systems Engineer

Power Generation | Oakville, Ontario | Full-Time, Permanent

OpTalent is leading this search on behalf of a leading Ontario-based power generation organization.

The Opportunity

OpTalent is partnering with a leading power generation organization to recruit a Combustion Turbine Systems Engineer to join its Asset Management and Engineering team.

This is an opportunity to take on a highly specialized technical role supporting the reliability, performance, and lifecycle management of combustion turbine systems across a fleet of combined-cycle power generation facilities in Ontario.

Working closely with plant operations, maintenance, engineering, and corporate stakeholders, you will provide technical expertise on complex equipment challenges, lead investigations and root-cause analyses, and contribute to capital projects, outage planning, and long-term asset strategies.

This is an individual contributor position suited to an experienced engineer who enjoys combining technical problem-solving with hands-on operational support, project involvement, and independent decision-making.

The position is based in Oakville, Ontario, with regular travel to operating facilities across the province.

Key Responsibilities

Combustion Turbine Engineering & Reliability

  • Develop and maintain specialized technical expertise in combustion turbine systems and associated equipment.
  • Provide engineering support to plant operations and maintenance teams, interpreting inspection findings, operating trends, field-test data, and control-system information to identify equipment degradation and recommend corrective actions.
  • Lead technical investigations, root-cause analyses, and equipment assessments, developing testing plans and ensuring corrective actions and lessons learned are implemented.
  • Monitor equipment health and performance using plant historians, OEM monitoring systems, inspection reports, vibration data, alarms, and maintenance history.
  • Develop and optimize maintenance strategies to improve equipment reliability, performance, and lifecycle cost.
  • Identify and assess technical risks and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.

Engineering Projects & Technical Solutions

  • Develop engineered solutions to address operational challenges and support capital projects from scope development through execution and closeout.
  • Prepare technical specifications, evaluate engineering alternatives, and review vendor proposals and technical deliverables.
  • Review OEM and vendor engineering documentation, including drawings, calculations, technical reports, and design submittals, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
  • Coordinate gas turbine performance and compliance testing, including test planning, data validation, correction-curve application, reporting, and stakeholder communication.
  • Evaluate and recommend vendors, contractors, and technical service providers based on technical expertise, quality, safety, and operational requirements.
  • Support the management of OEM long-term service agreements, including technical scope, warranties, change orders, service requirements, and commercial considerations.

Outage & Asset Lifecycle Management

  • Provide technical leadership during planned and forced outages, including scope development, field oversight, quality reviews, repair requirements, commissioning, and return-to-service decisions.
  • Plan and lead combustion turbine condition assessments and borescope inspections, including scope definition, inspection criteria, deficiency assessment, and repair recommendations.
  • Coordinate critical spares, long-lead components, specialized tooling, and contingency planning to support outage execution.
  • Develop and maintain fleet-wide lifecycle plans incorporating inspection history, maintenance intervals, equipment upgrades, risk assessments, and long-term capital forecasts.
  • Maintain and govern OEM technical information, including service bulletins, technical information letters, manuals, and recommended actions.
  • Ensure equipment modifications follow applicable management-of-change processes and that technical documentation, maintenance programs, spare-parts requirements, and training materials are updated accordingly.

Stakeholder Collaboration & Technical Leadership

  • Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Commercial, Supply Chain, Regulatory Compliance, Legal, OEMs, and external technical service providers.
  • Communicate technical findings, recommendations, and engineering decisions clearly to management and relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation, drawings, technical records, and reference materials.
  • Manage multiple technical priorities independently while supporting operational requirements across the generating fleet.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience with combustion turbines, gas turbine systems, or related power generation equipment.
  • Strong understanding of combustion turbine operation, maintenance, inspection, performance, and lifecycle management.
  • Experience supporting equipment troubleshooting, engineering assessments, root-cause analyses, and reliability improvement initiatives.
  • Experience with capital projects, technical specifications, vendor evaluations, and engineering design reviews.
  • Proficiency in interpreting mechanical drawings, including P&IDs, piping isometrics, general arrangement drawings, equipment layouts, and assembly and installation drawings.
  • Working knowledge of ASME PTC 22 (Gas Turbines), the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and ASME B31 piping codes.
  • Familiarity with project management principles and practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities, with the ability to develop practical recommendations for complex technical challenges.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. A technical writing sample will be required as part of the recruitment process.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities independently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to travel throughout Ontario and North America without restriction.
  • Ability to undertake assignments at Ontario operating facilities for periods of up to approximately 30 consecutive days.
  • Successful completion of a criminal record check.
