Original job description

About the Role

Outset Law is expanding into wills, estates, and trusts. We are looking for a lawyer to head this new practice area and help shape its direction from the outset.

Based in Vancouver, our boutique firm currently focuses on family law, including high net worth matters involving businesses, trusts, and significant assets. Expanding into wills, estates, and trusts is a natural next step, allowing us to support clients across closely connected areas of their lives.

This role offers the opportunity to bring your existing practice into a supportive firm, grow your client base, and build a team over time. You will have autonomy over your files and a meaningful role in developing the practice’s services, standards, and long-term growth.

We are looking for a lawyer with at least two years of call, an existing book of clients, and the experience and judgment to manage matters independently. The position is suited to someone who wants to lead a practice within a collaborative, lawyer-led firm that values excellent work and a sustainable professional life.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to head our wills, estates, and trusts practice
  • A meaningful role in shaping the practice’s services, standards, and growth
  • Autonomy over your files and client relationships
  • Reasonable billable expectations
  • Genuine flexibility over workload and schedule
  • A collaborative, lawyer-led work environment
  • Opportunities to work with clients whose family, business, and estate planning needs overlap
  • The opportunity to build and mentor a team as the practice grows

Requirements

  • Practising member of the Law Society of British Columbia
  • At least two years of call
  • An existing book of clients in wills, estates, or trusts
  • Experience practising wills, estates, and trusts law in British Columbia
  • The ability to manage files independently and advise clients with sound judgment
  • Strong drafting, preparation, and client management skills
  • An interest in practice development, leadership, and building a team

Compensation

Fee split with a minimum guarantee, or a salary of $100,000–$200,000+, plus a discretionary bonus and benefits.

A Message From the Founder

I started Outset Law because I believe the traditional law firm model is broken.

Too many excellent lawyers face constant availability, relentless billing pressure, and a practice that eventually takes over their entire life. Over time, that pressure affects judgment, energy, and the quality of work they are able to deliver.

Outset Law was built intentionally to give lawyers the space to practise well. Space to prepare properly. Space to think strategically. Space to build strong client relationships and a practice that is sustainable over the long term.

We are now looking to expand into wills, estates, and trusts. These areas connect naturally with the work we already do, particularly for clients with businesses, trusts, and significant assets.

I am looking for a lawyer who wants to take the lead in building this part of the firm. Someone who brings an established client base, takes pride in their work, and wants a meaningful say in how their practice develops.

Our standards are high. But lawyers should not have to sacrifice their health or their lives outside of work to do excellent legal work.

If you want to grow your practice, help shape a new area of the firm, and build a team over time, I would welcome the opportunity to speak.
